A native of Tennessee, Charles was stationed at Fort Jackson and served proudly as a Drill Instructor until his honorable discharge. Upon leaving his military service, he studied technical drafting at Midlands Technical College which led to his long career at Carolina Eastman (currently DAK Americas/ Eastman Chemical Co. Gaston, SC) working in the Facilities Engineering department where he was known for his strong work ethic and ability to find creative solutions to many production challenges. After his retirement, Charles enjoyed working at First Baptist Church, Columbia, in the woodshop building anything from bookcases to theatrical sets for the 4th of July celebration and most especially the Christmas presentation.
Charles was known for his warm personality and his genuine care for others. His stories and jokes could bring a smile and sometimes even a blush to anyone. He seemed to know just what folks needed- a little support and a little humor.
Although his wife of 50 years and love of his life, Barbara, preceded him in heaven, she was in his heart every day. They were truly made for one another and enjoyed a long, love-filled marriage.
His daughter, Melissa (John) Kaiser of Sandy Run, SC was his sidekick, little girl and best friend, who brought each other much joy. But his two granddaughters, Miss Renee and Miss Makayla Kaiser of Sandy Run, SC were his heart. Their accomplishments of school, sports and day-to-day life always made him proud. They enjoyed, inspired and most of all, loved each other. Shortly, before his passing both Renee and Makayla were accepted into the University of South Carolina at Columbia and that day he was the proudest Gamecock around.
Family was very important to Charles. He will be dearly missed by his nephews, Ferris (Beth) and Maxwell Way; nieces, Cindy (Dwight) Dennis and Tanya (Van) Mattingly; along with his step-grandchildren, Jessika and James (Chelsi) Kaiser.
Charles lived a full life filled with loved ones, good friends, the outdoors and never meeting a stranger. He truly lived the Lord’s command, “tend thy sheep”. To know him was to love him.
