
CONWAY - Ellis Cooper Matthews born August 23, 1921 in Saluda County, died Monday, April 8, 2013 at Agape Senior of Conway. He was 91. Funeral services for Ellis Cooper Matthews will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Caughman-Harman Funeral home, West Columbia Chapel with entombment in Southland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association for Dementia, 3223 Sunset Blvd. Suite 100, West Columbia, SC, 29169.
Mr. Matthews is survived by his sister, Mattie Charney, sister-in-law, Edna Robbins Matthews, brothers-in-law, Alvin Shull and wife, Ruth, and LaVern Shull and wife, Dixie and son, Daniel W. Matthews and Dan’s fiancée, Julie Smith. He was predeceased by his wife, Myrtle Shull Matthews, father Philip T. Matthews, mother, Quilla Estelle Corley Matthews, brothers, Philip Garland Matthews and Julian Durham Matthews
After serving in World War II in the Patton’s Army, he came home to marry Myrtle Shull. They were married at the Main Street Methodist Church parsonage by Rev. Ferguson in July, 1947. He then worked at the National Cash Register Company until he retired. He enjoyed the work outdoors and also traveling around the country. He also enjoyed working in his shop repairing and creating all sorts of items. He was a devoted husband and loving father, lifelong member of Main Street Methodist Church and will be sorely missed.
