LEXINGTON - JoAnne Carolyn Boozer Tribble, daughter of Gladys Vernona and Willis Sterman Boozer, died Tuesday night, August 18 2015 at Agape Senior Care in Lexington. She was 81. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2015 at Southland Memorial Gardens. A reception with the family will follow at the Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel at Southland Memorial Gardens.
When she was five years old, JoAnne and her mother survived the disruptive and tragic Tuberculosis epidemic of the thirties, but lost their father and husband in 1939. JoAnne remained in the loving care of extended family and dear friends while her mother spent two years in quarantine. When mom was declared healthy and reunited with JoAnne, they began life all over again. JoAnne attended Brookland-Cayce High School and graduated in 1952. She then met Richard Glen Tribble of Mississippi, whom she married in 1955. JoAnne and Dick were married a total of 57 years, 48 of which were spent in their beloved Lake Murray home, which they shared with numerous spoiled and pampered pets over the years.
JoAnne learned the mortgage business early in life and eventually ran for Register of Deeds of Lexington County in 1980 as a Republican. She won, and served with distinction for 16 years. She was an active supporter and member of the Republican Party. She and Dick lived a life of joy, practiced charity toward many varied causes and embraced the Christian fellowship of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Lexington. She and her many friends were very active in the early days of organized animal welfare efforts such as "Save our Strays." Helping pets find great homes and care was dear to both she and Dick all their life.
She was predeceased by her mother, Gladys Vernona Whittington and her husband, Dick. She is survived by her brothers, Mark (Barbara) Whittington and Eddie (Debra) Whittington of Gaston, sister, Emily (Michael) Dyess of Wilkesboro NC, and extended family.
Just as JoAnne faced the ravages of Tuberculosis on her family with courage as a child, she fought a valiant fight with Alzheimer's the final four years of her life. Special appreciation is reserved for the staff of Morningside Lexington, Agape Harbison, Agape Hospice and Agape Lexington. These are very dear people who took wonderful care of "Jo Jo", as they lovingly called her, over this time. Special thanks also go to friends, Jan Pollack and Veterinarian Amy Spies for helping with JoAnne's pets when she moved into assisted living.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 1130 Saint Peters Rd., Lexington, SC 29072 or the Humane Society, 121 Humane Lane, Columbia, SC 29209.
