Steve was devoted to his family. He was a wonderful and caring brother to his sister, Susan Corley. He was adored by his niece, Cami Hudson, and nephews, Steven and Chris Hudson who he called “my 3 children.” He was Big Steve and Uncle Steve.
He graduated from Brookland Cayce High School and Palmer College and served in the South Carolina National Guard. He began working with the SC Department of Revenue and retired early to take care of his father who had suffered a debilitating stroke. For 17 years, he faithfully cared for his Daddy daily in the skilled care facility.
Steve loved the outdoor world. As a youngster, he was taught how to hunt and fish. The “Guignard woods” across the street from his home were a wonderful playground for the neighborhood kids. His Daddy, Uncle L. and Uncle Boots would take him fishing, quail hunting, dove hunting, and deer hunting. Mac Rish was his rabbit hunting partner and best friend. However deer hunting was Steve’s favorite. He would go deer hunting with Uncle Boots on family property owned by the Gray family. Later in life, Steve managed to lease that land from the Gray’s and founded the Gray Hunt Club which his “son” Steven and his friends enjoy.
He was known as “The Collard Man.” He grew collards in his garden every fall to give away for New Year’s celebration dinners. One family needed 50!
He was a man of integrity, sweet-spirited, and loving. He was known for his generosity and always placing others first. Steve knew and loved Jesus. He exemplified the Fruit of the Spirit of love, joy, peace, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
His absence from this Earth will leave a hole in many friends and families’ hearts. He was loved by many and there is no doubt that he is reunited and rejoicing in Heaven with those gone before him. Steve had a “huge” kind, generous, caring heart! With any conversation, instead of saying “goodbye” or “see you later,” his phrase was “Now what can I do for you?” and he meant it.
A graveside service will be held for Steve at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 1st, 2023 at Southland Memorial Gardens located at 700 West Dunbar Road, West Columbia, SC 29170. Pallbearers will be members of the Gray Hunt Club.
