The family will greet guests at a visitation on Wednesday, April 11 from 6-8pm at Connally-Compton Funeral Directors. The funeral service will be on Thursday, April 12 at 10am at Robinson Drive United Methodist Church.
Dorothy was born on July 22, 1920 to Charles Lester and Eva Sue Lester in Durant, Oklahoma. After the Galveston Hurricane in the early 1900’s she lost many family members. She lived in several orphanages and was ultimately raised by her foster parents, James and Flossie Sawyer. After 4 to 6 weeks of courting Dorothy married Nolan “Pat” Murphy on August 1940. Pat would say to Dorothy, who he referred to as Brown Eyes, “I’ll make the living, and you make the living worthwhile”. She always enjoyed going hunting and fishing with Pat and their friends. Thanks to Dorothy’s great cooking skills no one left the Murphy home hungry. Dorothy rarely traveled, but enjoyed their 45th anniversary when their children sent them to Hawaii. On their 61st anniversary they went to Disney World with Galen and Cathy and their children. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Nolan “Pat” Murphy.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Ret. Col. Jim Murphy and wife Connie and Larry Murphy and wife Pam; daughter, Cathy Edwards husband Galen; grandchildren, Mindy Vrba, Ken Murphy and wife Stacy, Kimberly Paul and husband Glen, Brandon Murphy and wife Kristen, Staff Sergeant Lance Murphy and wife Lacy, Ryan Edwards and wife Jennifer, Cameron Edwards, Austin Edwards, Terri Stimple and husband Jerry, Robin Will, Pamela Autry and husband Tom, and Clifton Cook; and 26 Great Grandchildren.
The family would like to give a very special thank you to the staff of Royal Manor Nursing Home, the Visiting Angels, and in particular Laura Earl, for their care and kindness. Memorial donations can be made to Robinson Drive United Methodist Church.
