Dr. George S Lavenson Jr, lovingly referred to as “Doc” by his many friends, died Saturday, August 19th in the beautiful island of Maui, where he chose to share a life in majestic Lahaina with his loving wife, Judy. George leaves four children, Mark, Jim, Patricia and Dean and three grandchildren, Kelsey, Luke and Oliver.
As a Vascular and general surgeon, George worked tirelessly up to his last days educating and advocating for screening seniors for stroke prevention. When not at his desk researching and writing, George enjoyed reading, cooking, photography, jazz, flying, surfing, biking and driving his bright candy apple red Miata or riding his bright yellow Harley around the island.
Born in Tacoma, Washington, George graduated from the University of Washington Medical School and completed his residency at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. George served in the Vietnam war in 1968 and 1969. Later in life, George returned to active duty during the Gulf war. After 20 years of active service as an Army surgeon, George never abandoned the medical needs of military personnel, volunteering his trauma surgical skills at various locations, including LRMC, the largest American hospital outside the United States, In addition to his years in the service, George practiced in Visalia, California for 30 years.
Amongst George’s proudest achievements was the development of a cost-effective stroke prevention screening protocol. His lifelong advocacy for stroke prevention was recognized and honored by the Western Vascular society as recently as last year.
