Marthe Ann Dowd

Marthe was born March 5, 1955 in Oxnard, CA, to Frank Dowd, Sr. and Beatrice Bruner Dowd. She grew up in Los Altos, California, and graduated from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California, in 1981 with a degree in Theatre Arts. Marthe moved to Maui in 1988, where she worked most recently as an accountant for Casanova’s.

Marthe had a beautiful singing voice and a charismatic stage presence. She performed in many musicals, operas, and plays with Maui Community Theatre, and in California, She loved singing with the Maui Symphony Chorus. As she became more homebound, she became devoted to the bald eagles she met through the Institute for Wildlife Studies eagle cameras, and spent many happy hours watching them, and moderating on their website. She always considered the many, many friends she made through her kind, gentle, and understanding nature as her family. Marthe truly embodied the spirit of Aloha.

Marthe passed away on January 15, 2013 at home under the wonderful care of Hospice Maui. Her family is deeply grateful to their support and expertise.

Marthe is survived by her daughter Emily Dowd, her brother Frank Dowd, and her aunts Rosemary Dowd and Patty (Dowd) Pridmore, along with many, many devoted cousins, friends and ohana.

A potluck celebration of Marthe’s life will be held at The Temple of Peace in Haiku on February 3, 2013 from 5-7 pm. The theme is purple- Marthe’s favorite color. Borthwick Norman’s Mortuary assisted with arrangements.
