Leroy was born on May 4, 1952 to Alfred Leroy Madden, Sr. and Mary Frances Madden (Settle) in Washington DC. He grew up in Forestville, MD and attended First Baptist Church of Capitol Heights, MD and later was a member of Parkway Baptist Church.
After graduating in 1970 from Suitland High School, Leroy went on to work at McCall Printing and Washington Gas Company. Leroy was a Dispatcher at Washington Gas Company for 42 years, where he was grateful to have made good friends and a difference, when possible.
An avid sports fan, Leroy was also a competitor. He played baseball in church leagues, bowled in several leagues (some with his dad), and much to his family’s chagrin, he was great at most backyard games, including horse shoes! He was always ready for family volleyball, Backgammon, or card games. His love of golfing took him to many courses, including trips to Myrtle Beach making some wonderful memories with his “golfing buddies”.
Although he was always ready for a game of ANYTHING, one of his favorite sports past times were watching the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Redskins anywhere and with anyone (who was also cheering for a win). Later, his love of sports included Washington Capitals, as well as the Washington Nationals (especially when Pattie, a big fan, bought the tickets). He was thrilled to experience both a World Series (even though not his #1 team) AND a Stanley Cup championship in recent years. Later, Pop/Papa Leroy could be found in the cheering sections of baseball, football and basketball games for all of his grandchildren.
Leroy enjoyed traveling in several modes of transportation. He was known to travel miles of roadways to visit or support family, help someone in need or for any adventure, including the South of the Border to supply an impressive firework presentation for his family. He was known for his fancy Camaro in high school and later enjoyed the waterways of the Potomac and Patuxent catching the “big ones”. Prior to retirement, Leroy was encouraged by family to try traveling the roads in a recreational vehicle. He and Pattie enjoyed camping life with several “Camping Partners” of family and friends.
Leroy was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Linda Novak and his brother, Roger Madden. He is survived by his wife, Pattie Madden; son, Phil Madden (Kelly); daughter, Jennifer Cooksey (Jacob); son Christopher Madden; step sons, Steven Johnson (Tiffani) and Gregory Johnson; grandchildren Cole, Bryson, McKenna, Parker, Brooklyn, Mason, Raylan, Trenton, Trinity and Savion and sister, Donna Rinaldo (Ray); and 7 nieces and nephews. Leroy is also survived by the mother of his first two children, Betty Lee (Storck).
Leroy was blessed with not only a closeknit immediate family, but also an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins who also loved and supported him. He was very proud of his family. He continued to make wonderful memories with long-time friends who were so grateful for this bond. He will be missed behind the grill at family functions and camping trips; beside us in the boat, on the golf course, watching sporting events and game nights; and always in front of us, whenever needed. Leroy was loving and thoughtful and appreciated every relationship in his life.
