

James was born at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington DC on September 29, 1934. He was raised in Brandywine, MD by his parents, the late Millard S. Simmons and the late M. Elizabeth Wardlow Simmons. He graduated from Gwynn Park High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 until he was honorably discharged in 1960 while serving at Fort Meade, Maryland.
James lived and worked in southern Maryland, except for a brief period of time, until 1985 when he moved to Greeneville, TN. There he worked for Plus Mark, a division of the American Greetings Company, where he retired in 2005. In his spare time, he loved to drive around exploring the countryside and spent time in the outdoors, especially to hunt small game, birds and deer, and to fish. He also enjoyed taking care of his many cats.
He leaves behind his son, Donald H Simmons and his wife Kathy, his grandchildren Megan and Andrew, and great granddaughter Delaney (all of Clear Spring, Maryland).
A second great grand daughter, Sawyer, is expected Feb 21, 2016. James is also survived by his daughter, Lisa Quinn (John) of Sarasota, FL, his extended family in Greeneville, and several beloved cousins and friends.
A graveside service will be held on January 25 at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery located in Cheltenham, Maryland. Arrangements made by Huntt Funeral Home
