Dan and family
I am so sorry for your families loss. Your mom was a very kind and gentle person. She will be remembered.

PART 1
This week I learned from Dan Fisher that Margaret, his Mother and my  Aunt, passed away recently. She was like a mother, sister and dear friend to me in so many ways during my early years and later in life. No one could have asked for a more kind, gentle, caring and loving person to provide advice and comfort in days that seemed difficult to me. She changed my life in so many ways – always for the better. 

Margaret and Ron. Ron and Margaret. It could have been one word, because of the way they were linked together in life and will be in eternity. Both Washingtonians, from Southeast DC, they met in their teen years and were inseparable before finally marrying. Ron would often embarrass Margaret by comparing her beauty to Sophia Loren. Many consider Sophia Loren to be the most beautiful woman in the world. I think Ron was right. Move over Sophia, you’re number two on my list. It was Margaret’s physical and inner beauty that made her so remarkable. She complemented Ron’s nature and they completed each other. Their devotion to each other was an example to others. To me, Margaret was many people - a Mother, a loving friend and the sister I never had.

In my high school years, their guidance and love were a strong influence. In good times and tough, Ron and Margaret were there. When I wound up in the hospital after a close encounter with a tire iron to the head, Ron and Margaret were there for me. They collected me from the hospital, cared for me, and made sure there was no permanent head trauma. Of course, after these many years, it could be an explanation of my sometimes aberrant behavior after all. That’s my excuse. Nobody said that growing up in Anacostia would be a Rose Garden.

PART 3
In my senior year at Anacostia High School, I looked to Ron and Margaret for guidance about my future. I had wanted to go in the Marine Corps for as long as I could remember. While I wanted to go to college, I couldn’t imagine that my family could afford that option. I was going to enlist. Ron and Margaret suggested that I apply to the Naval Academy through the Washington, DC Commissioners. Commissioners ran the city with Congressional funding in those days. I had never even considered that possibility. When I was honored to be selected to attend the Naval Academy, my life was again changed forever. It was because of their love and nurturing advice that my path has taken me to a successful career in the Marine Corps, often despite my own flaws. I am forever grateful to Margaret for her love. She was always supportive of every one, even if she went without.

After Ron’s passing eight years ago, Margaret missed the love of her life every day until she could rejoin him. 

During that time, Dan has been solidly with his Mother to ensure she was not alone after Ron passed away. He has been a blessing to her and the kind of man every Mother would hope her son would become. Margaret and Ron’s love for Dan, her family and grandchildren was infinite.

I have been so fortunate to have her in my life. She made every day brighter with her smile and love. She will be sadly missed. We love you Margaret!

PART 2
I spent many an afternoon after high school with my other family in Anacostia – Ron, Margaret, Dan and Margaret’s brother, Eddie. After some rough and tumble sandlot football scrimmages, Margaret would dust us all off and make sure we had lunch. Grimy and dirty was fine. Margaret loved and cared for us all no matter how we looked.

To support herself and her family, Margaret worked during the day and completed high school at night. Always one to be humble and self-effacing, Margaret once told me about a faux pas she made in High School night classes. She had to recite a poem in class and one of the lines included the words, “The crows were flapping overhead.” When it came out, the words were, “The flows were….” Well, you can guess the rest. Margaret sid it was good that many of the night school students were young adults. Often when we would talk, I’d ask Margaret to recite the crows poem. She’d just roll her eyes and tell me to leave her alone. Naturally a nice hug would follow. There was no mercy in the Fisher household when you had embarrassing trivia. 

Margaret worked at George’s Radio and Television for many years. I can recall that she and Ron would get dressed to the “T’s” to attend the holiday parties. I’m quite confident that they were the handsomest couple in attendance. It was probably one of the few nights they could relax from their familial duties and have fun. The day after one of the parties, when Ron would regale the family with the night’s festivities, he said that Margaret was the limbo queen. The band played Chubby Checker’s “Limbo Rock” and Margaret was a winner. I can’t say we let that one go right away either.
