To sum up David’s life in only a few paragraphs would be an impossible task – but one we’re still willing to try. David was born to Kryan (Hibbert) and Albert Shorkey in Mt. Clemens on April 1, 1967. David’s favorite hobbies as a child were rock collecting, stamp collecting, and baseball cards; he loved collecting baseball cards. He was a boy scout, which explains a lot about David!
As a child, David was very friendly with a big smile. He was on the student council and was everyone’s friend. David started working at 11 years old, six days a week, at a party store. At 16, he started working at Stahls Meat Market and stayed there until he finished college. David did not get into trouble and was not a big partier because he had to work so much. He got excellent grades and finished in the top twenty academic achievements in his high school. He also received many scholarship offers for college.
He had known his wife Sarah since she was sixteen years old. They met in church at the Shores Church youth group. They had their first date on August 8, 1988, and they never looked back. They got married on July 27, 1991. They have two precious children, Alexandra and Jack Shorkey.
After graduating high school, David attended Wayne State University, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, David worked at the Kirlin Company for 21 years. Then he switched to Clarius Lighting and Controls for the last six years.
David loved to play softball, golf, and to hunt. In 2008, David and three other friends started an annual summer golf outing together which they called the Friends Tournament. Over the years, more and more friends have joined and they have accomplished their goal of visiting every significant golf resort in Michigan They even added a few alternative resorts outside of the state.
David and Sarah loved to travel with friends and would ultimately visit over thirteen different countries, including Mexico, Aruba, Curaçao, Italy, Greece, France, and Croatia. When pressed to pick a favorite destination, David would say, Venice! Their life motto was, “Let’s go on an adventure.”
David’s ministries in the church included teaching Sunday school, running an Upward Basketball program, and working with the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace program.
David was predeceased by his two brothers, Steven John Shorkey and Jeffrey Shorkey. David is survived by his brother-in-law Tim (Terri), children – Jerry, Micah, and Matthew; brother-in-law Paul (Van Anh), children – Brie and Zach; and sister-in-law Beth (Sean), children – Jacob, Katie, and Tess.
