Delmar Dean Hutton, "Dean," age 73 of Clinton Township, died Friday, January 12, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at home. Dean was born November 17, 1944 in Detroit, son of the late John Gilbert Hutton and the late Vera Freda (nee: Quickel) Hutton.Born and raised in Detroit, Dean attended Denby High School on the city's east side. It was around that time in his life that Dean found himself swooning over a gorgeous young girl by the name of Bonnie. What began as friendship eventually blossomed into love, and that love led them both to the altar where they shared their "I Do's" in the presence of family and friends alike on April 24, 1965 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Detroit. When the priest introduced the newlyweds, it was the beginning of a love-filled journey that found Dean & Bonnie building the comforts of home, raising two boys, and growing deeper in love with each passing day. For many years the Hutton's called Roseville their home enjoying the friendship of their neighbors nearby. It would be a few years later that they felt the nudge to call somewhere new their home, so they picked up the stakes and shuffled off a bit northeast to the neighboring community of Clinton Township. A sprawling and growing community, where Dean ultimately settled into retirement and began his journey throughout the golden years. Not long after sharing his vows with Bonnie, Dean entered into a commitment with our armed forces that found him spending six years, from 1966 thru 1972, as part of the Army Reserves. At a time when our country was caught up in a number of challenging events, it was young men like Dean that were trained, and at the ready, to serve in a much greater capacity,…for our country and its flag. For his career path, Dean joined the crowd of young men who went knocking on the door of the automotive giants and were welcomed in with open arms. He was a mere 24 years old when he started working for Chrysler. Eventually completing the apprenticeship program, he became a Skilled Trade Welder Repairman, the position that held the remainder his career that spanned over 30 years. After giving of his talents and extending the utmost in service excellence, Dean finally accepted his well-deserved retirement in 1998. While in retirement Dean always stayed active and busy. He was not the type of person who was content to simply lay around all day. Dean became "Mr. Fix-It", he found great enjoyment in tinkering around the house,…and even more especially out in the garage. Yes, he was often called upon to fix the computer or tend to the little issues that would pop up around the house. However, the "real work" was what Dean accomplished in his garage,…pretty much what most men consider their castle, right? The majority of what Dean tinkered with, out in his castle, came with a set of wheels. From bicycles to dirt bikes, and yes, especially motorcycles. If it had wheels and a motor, Dean was all over it. Not only repairing bikes, he also possessed a strong passion for riding them as well. This reflects his earlier years and the association he shared with the "Flying Horsemen,"…a host of dirt bike and moto-cross riders who raced and competed with each other. Dean would often reflect on the scrambles he competed in at the track in Brown City. More than just riding and competing, Dean ultimately threw his hat in the ring to help manage the organization. This led to the position of Vice President of the Flying Horsemen,…a role he took seriously and held in the highest esteem. It was in the early 70's, perhaps even beforehand, that he and a buddy used to hop on their motorcycles and head out for those annual summer trips they enjoyed so well. On one momentous day, that "great idea light bulb" flashed over Dean's head and spurred the beginnings of the "Hutton Motorcycle Touring Club." As a charter & founding member of the HMTC (Circa 1973), the club was formed to expound on what he and his buddy had begun and enjoyed together, but on a much grander scale,…and grew it did. Dean cherished his time together to see America on a bike with a bunch of fellow riders which evolved into an annual trip that became tradition for the club. As a group, the HMTC's treks have taken them to every state east of the Mississippi River, adventures of which have produced a collection of wonderful memories of places visited and the splendor of what they enjoyed along the way. For 30 years, Dean was a part of it all until he finally retired from riding in 2003. But like the old saying goes; "you can't keep a good man down,"…Dean continued the tradition of the annual bike trip not on his motorcycle but following along in his minivan.Another of Dean's pleasures was enjoyed with a gun in his hand each time he visited one of his favorite spots, the Brown Bear Shooting Range in Chesterfield. Dean became part of another group, the "Square Shooter's Club" which he initiated in 2008. Still providing that sense of competitiveness that he loved, this was a bit more exacting and commanded a precision that seemed to flow through Dean naturally. He was great with a gun, so much so that he was designated the rank of Distinguished Expert. Tuesday evenings were always an evening blocked our for Dean's time spent at the shooting range. Following the Gun Club and range time, friends and family would enjoy a meal at the Sugar Bush Restaurant. Many of Dean's fraternal associations have been touched on, yet one of the most important remains untold,…that being his association with the Mason's, a brotherhood of which he was a member since 1980. Hailing as a Past Master of the Pillar Lodge #526 in Mt. Clemens, much of Dean's membership was spent at the Roseville Lodge #522 where he never grew tired of serving at their breakfast & dinner events, assisting with the lodge's annual Christmas party, and helping entertain the members that would come for periodic visits from the sister lodge in Canada. Those were always special times for Dean, and he was always the gracious host. The Mason's were an important chapter in Dean's life, a kinship of believer's that provided him a plethora of benefits, as well as the honor of knowing many of the powerful people who had come before him and the allegiance they bore to their faith and country. Being the patriot he was, his Masonic leanings merely helped to cement that which he held most dear in life. And if we're talking allegiances, there just has to be a mention of the music that rang Dean's bell,…the unique and eclectic voice of the king himself, Elvis Presley. Sometimes smooth, sometimes rockin', sometimes Gospel, but truly an all-time favorite and go-to choice for Dean on the jukebox. Another of Dean's sedentary pleasures was enjoyed on the television watching the old westerns, especially the ones with the Duke, John Wayne. Dean never grew tired of being entertained by the memories of Bonnie and himself being whisked off to the glitz and lights of Las Vegas! With so many options to keep them entertained, it was definitely one of Dean's favorite places and memories made with his wife Bonnie.Yet with all that has been shared about the meaningful aspects of Dean's life, none of it could hold a candle to the love and affection he held for his grandchildren. With his boys grown and with families of their own, now it was time for Round #2 and the opportunity of helping to create some memories to last a lifetime. It was easier this time around following retirement and he was more than happy to lend a hand to his children by watching the grandkids, sometimes 2-3 times per week. For Dean, it was simply "pure enjoyment" spending time with them and filling their tummies with some awesome treats. (Isn't that what Grandpa's do best?) It wasn't rare for Dean to pick up a Little Caesar's pizza and take the crew for an afternoon at the George George Memorial Park in Mt. Clemens,…or perhaps a run to Sam's Club was in order as that was another great place for a slice of pizza or a pretzel. Yet when most of us reflect on our favorite "Grandpa Memories,"… it often involved Ice Cream and Dean knew this well, he also knew there were 2 no greater letters in the alphabet than DQ. That's all it took, just the mention of those 2 magic letters and the grandkids were on Cloud 9. (Papa never turned down ice cream!) Some other moments that are sure to provide his grandchildren a lifetime of smiles include the trips to the Peach Festival in Romeo,…challenging their minds at the Science Museum,…taking in the rides and attractions at the Michigan State Fair,…and the one that'll never be forgotten, the trip to Disney World in 2010. Where many kids hardly ever acknowledge their Grandpa, Dean's grandkids felt and experienced his love up close & personal, and it impacted their hearts immensely. I mean,…how cool is it to have a Papa that teaches you the finer points of preparing a "toasted" Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich,…or how to whip up the perfect pan full of Scrambled Eggs? Yet these are merely a couple of examples of the many ways Dean reached out to leave his grandchildren something memorable,…the most important being "himself." A loving husband, a caring father, and certainly a doting Papa, Dean's absence leaves a chasm that may seem difficult to span, but the love he leaves is the bridge that is sure to fill the gap. For all that knew this unique and genuine man, reflections on the many ways he blessed and influenced the lives around him are bound to bring a smile, a laugh,…or just maybe cause you to "whistle a happy tune." Go Rest High, Dear Brother!Dean was the beloved husband of the late Bonnie. Loving father of David (Dawn) Hutton and Mark (Sarah) Hutton. Devoted grandfather of Jessica, Austin, Jacob, Rebekah, and Hannah. Brother of Clarice (Ceburn) Hill-Christopher, Bonita (the late Richard) Lisiecki, Cheryl (the late Hugh) Dowell, the late Robert, the late Curtis (the late Tobie), and the late Dennis "Lucky" (Nancy) Hutton. Brother-in-law of Barbra (Jim) Thomson, Kenneth (Chris), and the late Jerry (the late Joann) Kovach. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and loving friends. His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Please share memories of Dean at his guest book above.
