Dorothy Loretta Markowski, age 95 of Warren, died Tuesday October 29, 2019 at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, Michigan. Dorothy was born May 23, 1924 in Biloxi, Mississippi, daughter of the late Charles McGinn and the late Luella (nee: Bang) McGinn.
Raised as a Southern Belle in the heart of the South, and one of a family of twelve children, Dorothy graduated from Biloxi High School and later worked as a telephone operator. It was by a chance meeting with a handsome Army Air Corpsman, by the name of Casimir from Detroit, that these two lovebirds would begin a love affair that would last over 67 years.
Dorothy and Casimir married in 1945 in Biloxi, Mississippi. Not only did they promise themselves to each other, but Casimir also found himself promising Dorothy's mother that he would bring her daughter back from Detroit to Biloxi once a year. Casimir kept that promise and, over the many years, the family enjoyed their annual summer vacations together to Mississippi.
Dorothy and Casimir began their life together residing in Detroit. In 1965, they picked up stakes and moved to the burgeoning community of Warren. Over the years, Dorothy embraced being a "Stay at Home" Mom who loved caring for her children, cooking, and keeping a tidy, loving home for her family. She was active with her children's school where she enjoyed volunteering and being a member of the PTA. Amidst all of this, Dorothy managed to squirrel away some time for a bit of recreation which came in the form of bowling. She and Casimir were avid bowlers who found great fun and entertainment in the league memberships they enjoyed and competed on, as well as the wonderful "Bowling Buddies" they amassed along the way. Dorothy will also be remembered for her deep and abiding faith, and for how that love and kindness emanated from her with a radiance that could have only come from God. A devout member of St. Faustina Catholic Church, (formerly St. Edmund), she was a dedicated parishioner whose caring spirit left an impact that was felt by many.
Dorothy's life revolved around her family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She cherished having family over for the many holiday and birthday celebrations along with cooking delicious meals for everyone,...and" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">...and this girl could cook! If anybody knew their way around the kitchen, it was certainly Dorothy. All she needed was a stove, an oven, and a little preparation space, then just sit back and watch the magic unfold. Mealtimes were always a treat at Dorothy's,...and if you left her table hungry, you just weren't tryin'. Quiet times for Dorothy were spent at home solving crossword puzzles, being challenged to a rousing game of scrabble, or exercising her artistic flair in the intricate skills of needlepoint.
Being the last living matriarch of the family, Dorothy ultimately became the family historian as well. If you had a question or interest regarding the family lineage, ancestors, or stories passed down through the generations, Dorothy was your go-to person. She treasured her position within the family and was truly the glue that held it all together. This sweet Southern Belle and matriarch will be missed immensely and loved eternally.
Dorothy was the beloved wife of the late Casimir Markowski, and dear mother of James (Kelley) Markowski, Linda (Stan) Winiarski, and the late Kenneth (Anna) Markowski. She was the cherished grandmother of Steven (Sian) Markowski, Lori Markowski, Lisa (Timothy) Papiez, Jennifer (Anthony) Stefani, James (Audrey) Winiarski, and great-grandmother of Isabella, Alexis, Jaxon, Madison, Taylor, Jacob, and Avery.
