Edward Gilbert Hallums “Mumbles”, age 73 of Warren, died peacefully at home on Sunday, May 30, 2021 in Warren, Michigan. He was born April 6, 1948 in Detroit, son of the late John Jay I and the late Mary Wilmuth (nee: Gilbert) Hallums.
Born in Detroit and raised in Warren, Ed’s path of education would ultimately lead him to his graduation from Lincoln High School. From there he entered the world of the trades as an Ironworker / Rigger for Local 25 in Novi, Michigan. Proud to be a member for 43 years, Ed extended over 30 years of service excellence and loyalty to his union and its members. When he wasn’t at work, Ed’s prowess and all-around knowledge of things was often put to use through his unofficial title as “Mr. Fix-It” to everyone who knew him. He was a jack-of-all-trades and could fix just about anything. “If it needed repair, large or small…Ed was there to fix it all.”
And while speaking of memberships, perhaps the most endearing aspect of Ed’s life,…or “Mumbles” as he was more affectionately known,…was the camaraderie he shared with his fellow Harley Owner’s & Rider’s and their shared membership in the Fourth Reich Motorcycle Club. For over 25 years, Ed and his fellow biker’s shared together, rode together, and experienced life together as only Harley Dude’s can understand. The fraternal connection that held them together as one was both revered and respected, and he loved his brothers beyond expression. But then there was this same “Big Bad Tough Biker”…who also possessed a soft heart and owned a Teacup Yorkie named “Beau Diddley.”
Like many guys, sports played a big role in Ed’s life. In his younger years, he thoroughly enjoyed participating in both hockey and baseball. As the years went by, he would exchange playing hockey to coaching the same for his son, Eddie’s team. Then there was the other sport he loved, the game of Golf. Nothing beats a beautiful day on the links, searching for that elusive Hole-in-One,…unless you’re sharing it with another golf aficionado, of course.
Another passion of Mumbles’ was his appreciation and proficiency in music. Having amassed the talent of playing the guitar, piano and harmonica, Ed was certainly not short on entertaining as he had something for everybody. And if he wasn’t leaving it to an instrument, Mumbles often stole the show with his singing and dancing. With his songs and sounds held in high esteem, it wasn’t rare for requests to be made known,…and he was always happy to regale any and all crowds. Mumbles was truly the “Life of the Party!”
Mumbles will also be remembered for the strikingly beautiful landscaping that enveloped his homestead. From his well-manicured lawn to the splendor of his flower garden, it wasn’t difficult to see that Ed possessed both a green thumb, as well as the heart of a horticulturalist, as he poured the best of his tender-loving-care into nurturing his flowers,…a visual gift for the passer’s by, as well as for himself.
For those who may not have known, Edward was also an ordained minister for the state of Michigan, having married many of his family members and friends over the years. Of course, with ties to a Harley Club and all that accompanies that unique fraternity, somewhere down the line he assumed the title of “Sinister Minister”…a designation that Mumbles wore with great pride.
Mumbles knew EVERYONE! Even when he took the kids down to Disneyworld in Florida, he was running into people he knew. But with a charisma like his, it is certainly no mystery why & how he had such an army of fans and friends. Mumbles was loved by all and often described as a “legend”…due large in part because of his immense kindness,…and the funny & questionable stories that were often shared. (lol)
Ed always & lovingly put his family first,…yet was there for anyone who needed his help. Yes,…he was truly the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back, asking nothing in return. Possessing a selfless and infectious personality,…is it any wonder why he was adored by all? In his journey through life, Mumbles touched countless hearts and souls, and leaves a legacy of love for all to cherish with each reflection shared. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.
Edward was the beloved partner of longtime companion, Elaine “Phoenix” Manley. Dearest father of Eddie, Venessa, Roxanne, and Garrett. Loving grandfather of Destiny. Brother of John Hallums, Sue Barnes, and Mary Lou Smith.
Visitation for Edward will be held Thursday, June 3rd from 3-9 pm, with a 7pm Funeral Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren, Michigan.
Memorial donations are welcomed to ALS of Michigan, 24359 Northwestern Highway, Suite 100, Southfield, MI 48075. (www.alsofmichigan.org)
