Edward Protas, age 83 of Warren, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at St. Mary's Mercy Hospital in Livonia, Michigan. He was born on May 7, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late John and the late Sophie (nee: Oraha) Protasevich. With thanks & praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Edward for his service to our country during World War II as a seaman in the United States Navy. A decorated veteran who earned various medals and ribbons for his service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of operations, he was an Electricians Mate with the 61st Naval Construction Battalion. For the call to duty he so proudly served, we honor his sacrifices for the freedoms and liberties we enjoy today because he was there. He truly was part of the Greatest Generation. For most of his working career, Edward was a dedicated salesman in the auto parts industry. He enjoyed his work and the interaction he shared with the many customers over the years. When he wasn't working, Edward enjoyed a number of favorite pasttimes that called upon his nature as a dreamer. Whether it was casting his line in search of the Big One at the ol' fishin' hole, rolling his bowling ball in hopes of that notorious 300 game, or taking his chances toward that bank-busting winning ticket in the lottery,...his sights were always set high, but always having fun in the process. Edward also liked spending time with family and friends, especially when it included a rousing time around the table playing the various card games he enjoyed. And when it came to sports, there was no greater fan more loyal to his local teams than he. When it came to anything "Detroit,"...he was their biggest banner waver, for sure. Edward was equally renown for his great sense of humor. He will long be remembered for the laughter and joviality he brought to the lives of others with his jokes and lightheartedness. Another important aspect of Edwards life centered around his faith. Being devoted to his catholic beliefs and eager to serve in the church, he was most proud of the time he spent as an usher,...and even moreso for the fraternal ties he shared with his fellow brothers in the Knights of Columbus. As a tribute to his time and association in this devoted order, the Knights of Columbus will be praying the Rosary for Edward on Friday evening at the funeral home. Beloved husband of the late Angela. Dear father of Cynthia (Andrew) Hodges, Sandra (David) Stabile, and Steven (Becky) Protas. Loving grandfather of Jane, Edward, Karen, Paul, Ashley, Alyson, and Devin. Visitation for Edward will be held on Friday, November 12th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm, with a 7pm Knights of Columbus Rosary Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Rd) in Warren. He will lie in state on Saturday from 9:00am until the time of Mass at 9:30am at St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church, 31555 Hoover Road in Warren. Interment will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Dexter, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are welcomed to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association, 2700 Chestnut Street, Chester, PA 19013. Please share memories of Edward at his guest book.
