Following high school, Jason knew that his next step in life wasn’t that of seeking further education, but rather to put his hard working hands into action through the trades. More specifically, Jason chose to associate himself with the field of construction in which he was employed as a laborer. Basically that meant he was a “Jack of all trades” and answered the call of the boss wherever his skill set was most useful.
When Jason found time away from work, he had a few hobbies and pastimes that helped even out the balance between work and play. One of these was found in his love for photography. With an eye for capturing a multitude of subjects and scenery, Jason had managed to accrue quite the collection of photos and memories through his lens and flair for artistry. Another lens that kept him engaged was the one attached to his telescope. Known for being quite the “star gazer” and lover of astronomy, each occasion that he spent gazing at the night sky never ceased to fill him with amazement and awe at the wonders the heavens had to offer.
Jason will also be remembered for his love of the outdoors and soaking up as much sunshine as he could while enjoying the activities he coveted,…like his penchant for fishing. A regular Mort Neff of his era, Jason was a natural with a rod & reel in his hands, and he loved the challenge of besting his gill-breathing competition. It didn’t really matter so much where he was casting his line as there were many favorites on his “fishing hole list.” But perhaps most treasured were the times he spent on Harsen’s Island which afforded Jason a plethora of possibilities for reeling in his prey. Always in search of the Big One, he was happy in simply enjoying the wonderful moments of peace & serenity between casts,…right up until the bobber started moving. Then it was Go Time!
Some of the other outdoor activities Jason enjoyed involved getting a little exercise in the process,…like bicycling. A lot less impacting than running or the whole gym scene, hopping on his bike and tooling around the neighborhood provided all kinds of satisfaction and reward while doing something fun, too. Hiking was another of the pastimes that Jason embarked upon,…with his favorite spot being Bloomer State Park in Rochester, Michigan. A little walking, a bit of scenery to chew on, and the satisfaction in knowing that you’re achieving a workout without sweating profusely in the process. It’s probably why he managed to keep in such good shape.
It’s been said that there’s something special in people who have a gift for making things grow, and Jason was certainly in that company. Possessing the heart of a horticulturalist and a thumb as green as a leprechaun, there was a place that Jason often visited and could easily get lost, but never be closer to home,…in his cherished garden. From his beautiful flowers to the hearty vegetables he harvested, there was no question that Jason truly had a gift that was evidenced by the tender-loving-care he poured into his Patch’O’Plenty.
A loving son, brother, and nephew, Jason leaves us far too soon, but not without imparting the best of himself into the countless hearts of those who were blessed to know him and be loved by him. He endured immense physical trials while on this side of Heaven, but we can take comfort in knowing that he suffers no more. He leaves a legacy of love that will be fondly embraced with each reflection shared. Rest in peace, Jason.
