Jean Marie Doty-Sobosky, age 86, passed away peacefully at home October 1, 2021 from complications of heart disease and dementia. She was born May 7, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan to Ivan Leland Doty and Lillian Winona Leet-Doty. She married her Persing High School sweetheart and love, Joseph Sobosky, in October 23, 1954.
As a house wife, Jean, centered her life around family and friends. She also idealized the independence and significance of women in the workforce. As a young woman, she worked as a secretary and beauty technician. She valued family and centered her life around Joe, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Later in life she went on to be a secretary and medical assistant.
Her favorite activities were gardening and family vacations. Roses, impatiens and snap dragons were always featured in her yard. She found cruise vacations enjoyable in her later years, the last being to the Hawaiian Islands in 2019, a place where she dreamed of visiting to see the beautiful flowers.
Jean is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Joseph Sobosky, and her caring children Dana (Gary) Hoye, David Sobosky, Lisa (David Hudson) Heck-Hudson, and Gregory Sobosky. Her legacy also extends to six cherished grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Her furry friend and companion, Lucy Lu, also gave her happiness and love to the very end. Jean also had five siblings, all deceased prior to Jean: Forrest Doty, Linna Doty-Saide, LaVerne (“Vern”) Doty, Ivan Leland (“Lee”) Doty, Jr. and Ronald Doty.
Jean was a 12th-generation descendant of Edward Doty, who came to America in 1620 aboard the Mayflower and was included in the Mayflower Compact. Edward Doty was an indentured servant to Stephen Hopkins, later released as a free man, and lived in Plymouth, Massachusetts until his death in 1655.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, from 10:00AM until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 PM at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr Road, at Masonic, in Warren, Michigan. Jean’s final resting place will be the White Chapel cemetery in Troy, Michigan.
