In 1965, John and his family moved to Roseville, Michigan, where he spent most of his childhood. He attended St. Clement High School in Center Line, graduating with the Class of 1979. During his younger years, John developed a strong love for sports, especially baseball and softball, and was known to be a very talented and competitive player.
John made his living as a truck driver, working for several construction companies over the years. He took great pride in his work and was known for his reliability and dedication. Being on the road suited him well, allowing him time to think, listen to music, and enjoy the freedom of travel.
Music was one of John’s greatest passions. He had an extensive collection of vinyl record albums and especially loved the music of the 1970s, though he appreciated many genres. Some of his favorite moments were spent traveling to music festivals in St. Louis, Missouri, where he could fully enjoy the sounds he loved.
John also found joy in being outdoors. He loved fishing and treasured trips to downtown Detroit to watch the Detroit Tigers play. Whether at the ballpark, on the water, or listening to music, John knew how to appreciate the simple pleasures of life.
Above all else, John was deeply devoted to his family. He had a special love for his nieces and nephews and thought the world of them. He took pride in watching them grow and always wanted the best for them.
John will be remembered for his love of music and sports, and his unwavering devotion to his nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He was the beloved son of John (the late Eileen), and the late Mary Claire (nee: Grieshaber) Smith. Dear brother of Paul (Lori) Smith, Martin (Heather) Smith, and Mary Beth Basford. Devoted Uncle of Matthew, Bobbie, Joshua, Paul, Megan, Samantha, Kourtney, and Emma. Great Uncle of Faith, Hope, Robert, Zeppelin, Rhett, and Kori. He was the nephew of Larry (Sally) Smith, Lou (the late Kathy) Grieshaber, Gene (the late Peggy) Kelty, and the late Marvin (Alice) Grieshaber, Mike (Mary) Grieshaber, Madonna (John) Gray, Madeline Harris, Marc (Judy) Grieshaber, and Jim (Mary) Smith.
