October 11, 1937 – June 15, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Henry Wathen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on June 15, 2025, at the age of 87.
John was born on October 11, 1937, in Loogootee, Indiana, and spent his later years in Warren, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Orbey Wathen and Mable Elizabeth Carrico, as well as his siblings, Robert, Mary, Gladys, Louise, Patrick, and Thomas. John was also survived by his sisters, Agnes and Helen, who were a source of comfort and support throughout his life.
John met his loving wife, Joan (Monckton), while serving in the US Army (1956-1958). Married in 1958, they shared a deep and enduring bond for more than 66 years. His devotion and love for her was apparent to all. He was a proud father to James (Rebecca), Patricia (Gary), Sandra (Thomas), Kathy (Robert), Diane (Gerard), and Robert (Michelle), and a cherished grandfather to 18 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. His family meant everything to him, and his love for them was unwavering. You could always find John and Joan at sporting and school events celebrating their family.
John’s professional career as a business service manager with Lanier Corporation reflected his hardworking and dedicated nature. But more than his work, John was known for his honesty, humility, dependability, and sly sense of humor. He was a man who could always be counted on in times of need. His unassuming presence and nonjudgemental manner brought comfort and strength to everyone around him.
In his free time, John enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, but above all, his family was his top priority. Whether it was traveling, camping, hunting, or playing cards, John’s love for his family and friends never wavered. His legacy is one of deep care, devotion, and a sense of unwavering commitment to those he loved. He had a fondness for custard pie and biscuits and gravy.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
