Norbert W. Furtak, age 93 of Chesterfield Township, died Sunday, January 19, 2014 at home. He was born on May 6, 1920 in Hamtramck, son of the late Bolewlaw and the late Katrina (nee: Urban) Furtak. With thanks & praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Norbert for his service to our country during World War II. Having attained the rank of Tech 5 in the U.S. Army, he received numerous commendations and decorations for his overseas duties in various theaters of operation to include Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. For the call to duty he so proudly answered, we honor Norbert's service and the bravery he showed by standing in harm's way for the cause of freedom. Following the war effort, Norbert's return stateside would find him joining the employment ranks in the automotive industry as a skilled tradesman at General Motors. The joy of retirement came after 32 years of dedicated and loyal service to the automotive giant. When he wasn't working, Norbert's interests and pastimes included such things as enjoying a sunny day of the golf course, (and perhaps a beer or two)…a rousing game of billiards at the local Pool Hall, (and another beer)…tempting "Lady Luck" during one of his many trips to the casino, (where's that waitress, I need a beer!)…and traveling, one of his favorite pastimes which took him to many interesting places on the map.Yet, without question, one of the most special and entertaining highlights for Norbert were the memories made in association with his fellow dancers in the Warren Polka Boosters. It was something that he and Gertrude shared together, and a group of friends that were treasured in a very genuine way. Norbert & Gertrude could cut-a-rug with the best of them, and truly cherished each embrace on the dance floor while in each other's arms. They were "class" personified!Norbert was the beloved husband of the late Gertrude. Loving step-father of the late Gerald Dryzmala. Brother of the late Edward, Walter, and Mitchell "Whitey." Brother-in-law of Ann Furtak and Delphine Furtak. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.Arrangements were entrusted to the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren. Please share memories of Norbert at his memory book.
