Roy J. Turner, age 82 of Warren, died Monday, August 6, 2012 at home.He was born on March 14, 1930 in Detroit, son of the late Joseph and the late Josephine (nee: Killewald) Turner. With thanks & praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Roy for his service to our country during the Korean War era. Having attained the rank of Yeoman 3rd Class, he answered the call-to-duty with pride and patriotism, and served with distinction in preserving the freedoms & liberties we enjoy today. Following his time in the navy, the desire to rekindle the kind of brotherhood he enjoyed with fellow naval mates just naturally took its course when he joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Walter F. Bruce Post 1146 in St. Clair Shores. This fraternal order, and association with veteran's from all branches, provided Roy an important and invigorating source of support with his fellow comrades-in-arms. Like most men, many of Roy's pastimes were enveloped through the realm of sports. Though he enjoyed and watched them all, there were a couple that stood out,'like the game of golf. Not merely satisfied with watching the sport, Roy loved to play the game as well, and spent many sunshiny days out on the links chasing that elusive hole-in-one. Nothing spelled 'fun' more than sharing a great day of golf with a buddy! The other sport he derived passion from was that of the game of hockey. But with hockey, it was more about 'who' than 'what' that provided him this sport's favor,'as the player's were his grandkids! He loved attending their games, and they had no better fan than that of their Grandpa. Roy also enjoyed traveling, especially when it meant heading up north to the family cottage at Higgins Lake. Nestled on the lake's west shore, this 'home away from home,' for Roy, was always a welcomed escape from the urban frenzy, and provided him countless hours and memories of the serenity and purity that Michigan's back country had to offer. Rest and relaxation were always tops on the agenda, and that agenda never ceased to come to fruition. Married for over 55 years to his beloved, Lois,...the two of them enjoyed a wonderful life together building a home, raising a family, and nurturing the bonds of love that kept them close. Roy will forever be renowned as a 'family man extraordinaire' who doted on his loved ones with every opportunity he was afforded. The legacy of love he leaves is strong and true, and the gifts he shared as a loving husband, father and grandfather will never be forgotten. He may be gone from our presence, but not from the multitude of hearts that he touched along life's way,'hearts that will remember his love and treasure it always. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally. He was the beloved husband of Lois. Dear father of Denise (John) Garafola, Laura (Tony) Iafrate, and Greg (Madeline) Turner. He also leaves eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.Visitation for Roy will be held on Thursday, August 9th from 3-9pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Rd) in Warren. His funeral service will be conducted Friday 11:00 am at the funeral home. Please share memories of Roy at his guest book.
