Shirley May Edwards - Age 85 of Roseville, died Friday, March 29, 2013 at Sanctuary at the Abbey in Warren. She was born on August 23, 1927 in Detroit, daughter of the late Gordon and the late Annie (nee: Campbell) Hazzard.Describing Shirley's gifts and pastimes is easy,…she was truly a "Lady of Expression!" She possessed a varied array of talents and skills that were all a wonderful expression of God's touch in her life. Her love of the arts definitely had its place and often took its form in the artistic drawings she produced. Then there was Shirley's musical gifts which were enjoyed by all throughout the years each time she sat down to the piano. Yes, Shirley could "tickle the ivories" with the best of them, and she always filled the room with her unique style of resonating entertainment. It didn't take much for Shirley's talents to infuse a little "boogie-woogie" in the soul. Obviously, Shirley's gifts had much to do with the works of her hands, and this was never more evident than in her sewing and quilting endeavors. Though her talents in this realm were often realized in her lone, quiet moments, Shirley's ultimate sewing & quilting enjoyment came when she joined her fellow sisters from church as a member of the Mary Martha Society. Together, these ladies spent countless hours creating some beautiful needlework pieces,…yet more importantly, sharing in the fellowship that was truly the fabric of their friendship and sisterhood.Another of Shirley's gifted expressions was found in her gardening pleasures,…a visual splendor and example of the tender-loving-care she exuded in the many, beautiful flowers that adorned her yard. From the roses, irises, tulips and sunflowers, to everything in between, Shirley's yard was another testimony to the work of her hands and her nurturing spirit. When it came to a little fun, Shirley's hands enjoyed the challenge of piecing together jigsaw puzzles. Not only did she possess a host of talents with her hands, it's evident that she also mastered a great deal of patience as well. Yet undeniably, Shirley's greatest expressions were those derived from the exercising of her faith and her devotion to God. A devout Lutheran, and member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Warren for over 60 years, she exemplified the definition of servant, and poured her heart & soul into the church and its people. Always vigilant and willing, her care-giving spirit reached out in a multitude of ways,…and to so many. She cared for the church as if it was her own home, and Shirley was one of the most charitable people when it came to volunteering her time and efforts. She did nothing out of selfishness, nor expected anything in return,…she simply obeyed the Lord and his leading. But that kind of unconditional love just couldn't go unaddressed. So it was, on January 20, 2004, Shirley was recognized as the "Lutheran Woman of the Year" by the church's Council of Lutheran Women. Though the award found her humble in spirit, it was an acknowledgement that touched her heart and a moment that remained with her through the years. And as much as she gave to her fellow man, those who truly knew Shirley can attest to her immense care and compassion for God's four-legged friends. Shirley was a huge supporter and contributor to the Humane Society, and a lover of animals. The most precious, of course, was her dearest friend, "Cupcake," her colorful, calico cat. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Shirley leaves behind a legacy of love that will forever be remembered and honored by those whose lives she touched and impacted. She was a blessing to many and a light of compassion to all. There's no doubt that she will hear her Master say; "Well done, my good and faithful servant." Beloved wife of the late Frank Edwards. Dearest mother of Charlotte (Don) Freeman, Robert Edwards, David Edwards, and Lloyd (Elaine) Edwards. Loving grandmother of Michelle, Jason, Elizabeth (Denis), Frank (Sheri), Adam (Jennifer), and Cheryl (Bernie). She was also blessed with 19 great-grandchildren; Ashley, Kayla, Michael H., Jordan, Joshua, Azia, Denis, Blake, Amber, Nichole, Cayden, Adrianne, Brandon, Ryan, Roberto, Alexandria, Michael E., Colin, and Michakela.Visitation for Shirley will be held on Tuesday, April 2nd from 3-9pm at the D.S.
