Sue was predeceased by her daughter Karen Smotherman, her son Wayne Smotherman, grandchild Jon Smotherman, and former spouse Larry Smotherman. Sue leaves behind her daughters Debra Stevenson and Connie Arnold; grandchildren James Smotherman (Ann), Brynn Stevenson (Scott McEvilly), Krystle Arnold, Anne Stevenson, and Ryan Arnold; great grandchildren Katelyn Smotherman, Carter Arnold, Rocco McEvilly, Olivia McEvilly, Gunnar Miracle, Cooper Miracle, and Elliana Miracle; and Brother Larry Crosthwaite (Denise).
Sue grew up in Hazel Park, Michigan, with her four brothers: Deane, Walter, Robert, and Larry. As a child, she loved ice skating and would often take the bus to downtown Detroit to practice. After high school, she worked for the City of Hazel Park and later left to raise her children.
Sue experienced a great life change in the mid-1970s when she learned to drive, went back to work, and joined Parents Without Partners (PWP), where she could often be found doing the thing she really loved – dancing. She relocated from Sterling Heights to her beloved Madison Heights, where she lived for many years. She worked for 20+ years in the men's department at Hudson's in Oakland Mall and retired in 2003. Sue and her best friend, Irene, enjoyed traveling together and took trips to Hawaii and her favorite, the Bahamas.
She loved gardening evidenced by her beautiful photo worthy garden, and her ability to easily identify any plant or flower by its scientific name. Despite life's challenges, Sue maintained a positive outlook and a good sense of humor. Her family will miss her dearly but finds comfort in knowing that she has reunited with friends and family who passed before her, as she often told us, how much she missed them.
