Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was a son of the late Dr. Ulysses T. Carter, Jr., DDS and Barbara June (Pinchback) Carter formerly of Burrillville, Rhode Island and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.
Mr. Carter grew up in Rhode Island with his brother and sister where his father practiced and his mother was a well-known teacher. He grew up in and was a former member of Chepachet Union Church. Larry played baseball, basketball and enjoyed ping-pong and badminton. After graduating from Burrillville High School, Larry entered Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. While at Virginia Union, with great pride, he joined the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., following in the footsteps of his father and two uncles, Dr. Gregory P. Carter of Newport News, Virginia and Dr. Paul S. Hough of Cincinnati, Ohio.
During his years in college, Mr. Carter and his brother worked summer jobs on Martha’s Vineyard joining a community of college kids supporting restaurants in the picturesque village of Edgartown, Massachusetts. Larry regarded it as a right-of-passage and recounted the experience with great humor and fondness. At night, they and several friends played drums in a jazz band.
After earning his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Union, Mr. Carter returned home to Rhode Island and embarked on what would become an over 40 year career in the insurance industry as a claims analyst with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in its Rhode Island office. His dedication and loyalty to MetLife engendered a long-lived career with the company from which he retired as a Senior Analyst in 2013.
His bright smile and infectious laugh bespoke a warmth and sense of humor that delighted all who knew him. Mr. Carter took great pride in his family, was thoughtful, caring and kind and held a quiet strength which imparted comfort to those in need of a shoulder to lean on. Deeply loved by his family, friends and co-workers, he will be missed dearly.
He is survived by his twin brother, Lance S. Carter and his wife, Ethel along with their daughters, Nicollette and Alexandria of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; his sister, Susan L. Carter and her husband, Steven L. Passmore of Palmdale, California; three beloved cousins, Patricia R. Carter of Newport News, Virginia and Washington, D.C., Gina Hough along with her children, Grace, Esme and Jacob of Washington, D.C. and Susan Miller of Warwick, Rhode Island, his “adopted brother”, Anthony Allen of Boston, Massachusetts as well as his godchildren; Nathan, Jarrett and Natisha Clarke-Hamrick.
Mr. Carter’s funeral arrangements will be private and are in the care of Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home.
