

Ann Marie Moeller of Silver Spring, Maryland died peacefully in her sleep on February 27, 2026. A lifelong Lutheran, she was born in Chicago and raised in the Chicago suburbs and later on a ranch near Spokane in Washington State. Ann Marie was a 1978 honors graduate of Harvard University and lived her faith by serving in the Peace Corps, stationed in Mali, from 1979-1981. She traveled extensively throughout Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia during her lifetime, including receiving one of the first individual visas to visit China in 1982. Ann Marie also lived in Los Angeles, New York City and Washington, D.C.
Her love of travel and keen observation skills led her to a career as a scholar of textiles, concentrating on the fabrication of and symbolism displayed in Japanese textiles. She was a curator who collected kimonos since her student years at Harvard. Ann Marie curated numerous exhibitions for the Embassy of Japan and the National Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as the Baltimore Museum of Art, Google Arts & Culture, the International Monetary Fund and the Kennedy Center. She gave lectures nationally for a wide variety of institutions including the Smithsonian Institution, Asia Society, The Textile Museum, Japan Foundation, and the Japan Information & Culture Center.
Ann Marie is survived by her partner Ed Lagan of Silver Spring, her brother Philip Moeller and sister-in-law Elizabeth Vella Moeller and their children Philip Jr. and Evans, all of Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by her parents Donald Moeller and Phyllis Moeller. She loved all of these people dearly and showed it through her joy of life and generosity.
Visitation will be held at Joseph Gawler's Sons Funeral Home – 5130 Wisconsin Avenue Northwest Washington, DC 20016 – on Saturday, March 14, 2026 from 1:00 pm. to 3:00 pm Ann Marie will be interred at the Mount Hope Cemetery near Fairfield, Washington. Donations in her honor can be made to the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota or The Textile Museum at George Washington University.
