Perky will be best remembered as having been the first golfer to have played in every USGA Championship event for which he was eligible, multiple times in some cases, which include the Junior Championship, Amateur Championship, Open Championship, Senior Open Championship and finally the Senior Amateur Championship! No one has yet to duplicate that feat. He won numerous local and regional tournaments as well. Over the span of five decades, he met and played with some of golf’s best players: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Ken Venturi, Julius Boros, Harvie Ward, Ben Hogan, and Lee Trevino, to mention a few.
In high school, he was a member of the St John’s Sports Hall of Fame-winning golf team. They won the Metropolitan Schoolboy Team Championship for three straight years, with Perky being undefeated as Team Captain. He also won the Individual Schoolboy Championship and the District Junior Open. He received the first-ever golf scholarship from Georgetown University in 1953 where he also went undefeated from 1953-1957.
During his service in the US Army, he won the Austrian Amateur Championship in Vienna in 1959 and finished second in France, Germany and Belgium. In the US Army European Championship, Perky finished 2nd in Berlin.
Perky is currently inducted into the Maryland Golf Hall of Fame (2023) and the St John’s College High School Sports Hall of Fame (2012), both individually and as a Team member!
Perky came from a family with a distinguished history in local real estate construction. With experience in residential construction, he spent his career as a well-respected real estate appraiser.
His telling of a tale or golf story was always a special treat, and he was a gifted writer. He will be missed by so many but never forgotten. We love you!
