Died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at his home in Washington, DC, at age 95. Predeceased by his first wife, the former Leah Lipson, in 1969 and by his second wife, Elizabeth Mueller Ellis, in 2002. Judge Friedman had a long career as a distinguished lawyer and judge, and was serving at his death as a Senior Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He was much loved and is survived by his four stepchildren from his second marriage: Elizabeth (Buffy) Ellis (Robert Rizzi), Jonathan Ellis (Teresa Ok), Benjamin Ellis (Marlene Donnelly) and Nancy Ellis (Patrick McElligott). Also loved and survived by nine grandchildren: Chris, Warren and Charlotte Rizzi; Henry and Lili Ellis; and Anna, Imogene, Robert and Margaret Ellis. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service to be held on Saturday July 16, from 3-5 pm, at the Cosmos Club, 2121 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20008. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to his alma mater, the Columbia Law School.
