
Edward G. Griffin. On, 30 June 2017, in Washington, DC at the age of 90 years. Dr. Griffin was born in New Haven, CT and graduated from Milford High School and went on to receive degrees from Yale University and Columbia University. He also attended Keio University in Tokyo as a Fulbright Scholar from 1954-1956.
Dr. Griffin was the son of Edward and Kathern Griffin. He was preceded in death by his wife Jane T. Griffin. Griffin is survived by his daughter, Sarah Urban (Greg) of Bethesda, MD ; his sisters Nancy Pluto of New Bern, NC and Katherine Carberry of Milford, CT; and brothers Lawrence Griffin of Milford, CT and Robert Griffin (Rosanne) of Narragansett, RI.
Dr. Griffin was drafted into the United States Army in 1944. He was sent to the University of Chicago to study the Japanese language, and then went on to serve in the Army of Occupation with the 24th Infantry Division. The time in Japan ignited a lifelong love of Japan and the Far East.
In addition to his long career with the State Department, Ed taught part time at George Washington, Howard and American Universities in both graduate and undergraduate seminars and courses. He also chaired an NPR Japanese online discussion group until 2012.
Friends may call at JOSEPH GAWLER'S SONS, 5130 Wisconsin Ave. at Harrison St., NW, on Saturday, July 8 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The funeral service for Dr. Griffin will be conducted at 12:00 on Saturday, July 8 in the Hagan Memorial Chapel at Joseph Gawler’s and Sons. Interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville, MD.
