
Elizabeth Mason Steuart Moore, age 95, of Sumner in Bethesda, Md., passed away peacefully on Friday, March 18, 2022. She was born on December 16, 1926 at Sibley Memorial Hospital when it was located on North Capital Street, N.W. Elizabeth was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard P. Steuart, a locally prominent family. According to The Evening Star, young Miss Steuart was to be known as “the Almas Temple Baby” by the Women’s Guild of the hospital since her father, Leonard P. Steuart, was the Illustrious Potentate of Almas Temple.
Miss Steuart, a third generation Washingtonian, graduated from Holton-Arms School, attended Colby College and Northwestern University. As a young woman, Elizabeth was athletic, energetic and loved to ride horses. She was an enthusiastic fan of the Washington Redskins, the Washington Senators, Nationals and the Masters Golf Tournament.
Elizabeth Steuart married A. Wallace Moore, Jr. on December 30, 1953. She supported all of her husband’s activities including his membership in numerous Masonic organizations and the Orr-Moore Hunting Club. Mr. Moore preceded her in death in 2016 after 62 years of marriage.
Mrs. Moore’s favorite place on earth was Opawaka Lodge on Dashwood Island in the St. Lawrence River. The Moore’s owned the island and Mrs. Moore would spend the summers there entertaining guests, supervising the care of the property and enjoying the cool breezes and fresh air. It was her domain and her sanctuary.
She was a member of Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church, Congressional Country Club, Columbia Country Club, and the University Club. Mrs. Moore supported many organizations to include but not limited to Sibley Memorial Hospital, the National Rehabilitation Hospital, the White House Historical Association, St. Joseph’s House, and the Special Olympics. She was thoughtful, kind and generous to all who knew her. Elizabeth Mason Steuart Moore spent the last few years of her life finding ways to help others. She lived a full, meaningful life. She is survived by nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
A funeral Service will be held Friday, March 25, 2022 at 10:00am at Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral home located at 5130 Wisconsin Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20016. Internment will follow at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Road Brentwood, MD 20722
