With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Elizabeth on April 25, 2025. Elizabeth Staveley Long Smyth, aged 95, was born in Washington DC on September 29, 1929. Daughter of Augustus C. Long and Elizabeth (Betty) Walsh Long, Elizabeth and her two sisters, Ellen and Sheila, lived a fascinating life of international travel in their youth. Her father was the Chairman and CEO of Texaco and held many posts with Texaco in Ireland, Holland, various locations in Europe and ultimately New York City. Her mother was the daughter of the late John Walsh, chief counsel of the Federal Trade Commission. Elizabeth mastered several languages (fluent in French, Dutch and Spanish) and prided herself on her ability to carry a conversation with a local country accent.
Elizabeth married Nicholas Patrick Dillon Smyth, an Irish doctor who became a US citizen and captain in the US Army in September of 1955. They had five children and lived in various locations while Nicholas was early in his career as a Cardiovascular Surgeon, ultimately settling in Bethesda, MD and later Naples, FL. She was pre-deceased by her husband Nicholas (2008) and is survived by five children, Sheila Smyth of Boulder Co, Brian Smyth (Dee) of Pasadena CA, Nicholas Smyth (Jussara) of Tampa FL, Augustine Smyth (Ellen) of Chevy Chase DC, and Patrick Smyth (Sandra) of Lakeland FL. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, nieces, nephews, one great grandchild, and many informally “adopted sons and daughters.”
Cherished by all who met her, Elizabeth was the epitome of a “Lady,” carrying herself with a confident grace, deep empathy for all she encountered, a wonderful sense of humor, and an ever-present smile. Elizabeth opened her home to any and all and she sought out people in need or alone to bring them into her world. She was a truly remarkable person and will be deeply missed by all.
Services for Elizabeth will be at Blessed Sacrament, in Chevy Chase DC on May 9th, (Visitation at 10 AM, followed by Mass at 11am). Private burial.
