
Elva was born on St. Thomas on December 4, 1925 and taught in the Virgin Islands public school system for 38 years, receiving numerous awards during this period, including Teacher of the Year.
Elva leaves behind her beloved husband of 61 years, Claude V. Christian (the former Commissioner of Finance of the U.S. Virgin Islands), son, Morton L. Christian of Fort Wayne, Indiana (together with Cynthia, his wife, their seven children and thirteen grand-children), daughter Claudette M. Christian of Washington, D.C. (together with her husband, Donald I. Hertzmark) and daughter, Laurel M. Christian of Washington, D.C. (together with her husband Edward T. Rhodes, Jr.) and numerous other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of the Oblate Sisters located at 2907 Ellicott Terrace, NW Washington D.C. 20008. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Washington Animal Rescue League ( www.warl.org), in her memory.
