Howard David Mendelsohn

David Mendelsohn, a long-time resident of Washington, DC, died on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at 76 years of age. He was deeply connected to family and friends and to his spiritual life. He enjoyed heated conversations and had a passion for fitness, travel, and colorful clothing. An avid sports fan with a special love for basketball, David worked hard to stay fit throughout his life, and his persistence and determination were an inspiration to many.

He was born August 1, 1948 in Fayetteville, NC, the first child of Edith and Jack Mendelsohn. He is survived by two siblings: Glenda Mendelsohn (Michael Clagett) and Gary Mendelsohn. His youngest brother, Jeff, preceded him in death.

A Tar Heel through and through, David earned both his bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His entire legal career was spent working with the U.S. House of Representatives’ Office of Legislative Counsel. In this nonpartisan role, David served members of Congress, their staff, and House committees, drafting language for all kinds of legislation. He worked extensively with the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and was especially proud of his work on Highway Bills.

David is survived by his wife, Cindy Shearin, and her children and grandchildren; his children, David Michael (Mary Woolston), Jacq, and Beth (James Wilson); his grandsons, Charlie, Ted, and Hank; and a large, loving extended family.
