James (“Jamie”) Wareham, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, in Washington, DC, following a nearly two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Jamie was a man of remarkable duality—equal parts fierce advocate and tender soul. In his legal career, he was relentless in defending his clients, commanding respect with his sharp mind and unwavering resolve. Outside of work, he revealed a softer side, marked by quiet acts of kindness and genuine care for his friends, family, and community—always offering support without seeking recognition. He moved seamlessly between these two worlds, earning admiration not only for his professional brilliance but also for his deep compassion and warmth. His quick wit, larger-than-life presence, and boundless energy made him the life of every gathering. Jamie found joy in many things—golf, wine, great conversation—but it was his ability to bring people together that defined him most.
He found community and camaraderie at Burning Tree Club, where his shared interests and deep friendships flourished. Over the last few years, that community stood by him, offering unwavering support that he cherished deeply.
Jamie lived a life so full, he never needed a bucket list. He traveled the world with family and friends, played rounds at world-renowned golf courses, and dined at some of the world’s finest restaurants. His parties—especially his legendary 4th of July and holiday celebrations—were marked by laughter, flowing George wine, fireworks, grilled tenderloin, and the kind of joy only he could orchestrate.
Helping others was second nature to Jamie. Whether it was offering legal counsel to friends in need, supporting causes he believed in, or chairing A Vintage Affair to benefit Children’s National, he gave generously of his time and talents. Although he often acknowledged he could have been a more dedicated student, he valued education and generously donated to St. Alban’s School, Duke University, and Northwestern University School of Law.
Born in Salt Lake City and raised in Park Ridge, Illinois, Jamie attended the University of Illinois, where he met his wife, Laura, and began cultivating a lifelong circle of friends. As president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, he was able to implement his philosophy of “nothing in moderation.”
After earning his JD from Northwestern University School of Law, he built a distinguished legal career spanning more than 35 years. He held significant positions at prominent international law firms including serving as the Global Chair of Litigation for multiple renowned US-based global firms. He became a trusted advisor to many of the world’s leading corporations, guiding them through complex litigations, regulatory matters, and high-stakes investigations. His expertise was sought by boards, executives, and legal teams navigating their most difficult challenges.
Jamie’s passion for democracy led him to early involvement in politics, beginning as head of Lawyers for Dole during Senator Bob Dole’s 1996 presidential campaign. He remained politically engaged throughout his life, supporting candidates and causes at every level of government.
He also lent his leadership to several boards, including the captive insurance company for Children’s National Medical Center, Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy, and the Northwestern University School of Law.
But above all, Jamie’s greatest source of pride and joy was his family. He adored his wife and sons. He was a constant presence at his sons’ sporting events, academic milestones, and personal pursuits. He never missed an opportunity to speak with pride and admiration about his sons and their latest accomplishments.
Jamie is survived by his beloved wife, Laura Wareham; his sons, Sean and Collin; and his siblings, Robert Wareham, Thomas Wareham, and Kimberly Wareham. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Claire (Farrelly) Wareham and Robert Carlton Wareham.
