Jerald J. Bernstein, Ph.D., physiologist and neuroscientist, passed away peacefully on June 20 due to complications from Type 2 Diabetes. Known as "Jerry" to his friends and colleagues, his illustrious career included research on spinal cord injury and teaching at the NIH, University of Florida, George Washington University, and the VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He also enjoyed sabbaticals in Israel and Würzburg. Dr. Bernstein retired in 1999, dedicating his time to travel the world, spend winters in Florida, and volunteer at home. He served as a docent at the Air & Space Museum, delivered presentations on old-time radio shows, and taught Chi Gung to various interest groups.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Frances Pitlick, his son David from his first marriage, and his grandchildren: Lyla Bernstein Ashburn and Joshua Ashburn, Dara Bernstein, and Mary Bernstein. His first son, Steven, tragically passed away just two weeks earlier in June. A private memorial service will take place at a later date.
Donations in Jerald Bernstein’s honor may be made to Christopher Attinger M.D. Wound Healing and Reconstruction Endowed Fund at Medstar Georgetown Hospital or to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad.
