

Of Washington, DC died December 4, 2016 at age 82. A disabled American Veteran, he was born in New York City on July 5, 1934 to John T. and Julia Tobin O'Neill, and was raised in Red Hook, NY. A member of the Red Hook Central School Class of 1952, he graduated from Brown University, Providence, RI, Class of 1956, and attended graduate school at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. He served in the U.S. Army, with assignments in the Far East. He worked for the American University in Washington, DC and as a civilian employee of the Navy Department until his medical disability retirement, following which he did over 20 years volunteer work at the VA Hospital in Washington, DC. He was married in Washington, DC on November 23, 1973 to the former Sandra Walker, of Fairfax, VA, who survives at home. He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Clare O'Neill Carr, of Red Hook, NY, and is survived by a brother, William J. O'Neill, and his wife Jean, of Red Hook, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews. John had a special feeling for life and people, with a lifelong interest in history, world events, and politics, as well as fishing, his happy spirit, abiding Roman Catholic faith and positive outlook on life, despite his almost lifelong disability. He will be dearly missed. Relatives and friends are invited to call at Joseph Gawler's Sons LLC., 5130 Wisconsin Avenue NW (corner of Harrison St.) Washington, DC on Monday December 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Annunciation Catholic Church 3810 Massachusetts Ave. NW Washington, DC on Tuesday December 13, 2016 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Falls Church, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Annunciation Catholic Church or The Nature Conservancy.
