He attended St Ann’s Academy grade school from kindergarten through 8th grade, St Johns College High School, and University of Maryland, where he was a proud member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Upon graduating from Maryland in 1961, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving in Okinawa, Japan and then at Camp LeJune, North Carolina. On May 1, 1965 he married his college sweetheart Ellen Flood of Chevy Chase, Maryland, the start of a beautiful 54 years of true partnership and love.
After finishing his military service, John began working at his father-in-law Everette Flood’s car dealership “Flood Pontiac” at Van Ness in DC until it closed in 1980. With four young children to care for, John pivoted to quickly changed careers to become a stockbroker and financial advisor at Thompson McKinnen, through several buyouts, and finally at Wells Fargo where he was joined by his eldest son Jay. In 2016, John retired after some 35 years of dedicated service to his many clients.
He was a devout Catholic his entire life, joining Blessed Sacrament in 1977 and sending his four children to Blessed Sacrament School. In his later years, he continued to watch mass on Sundays and receive the Eucharist, which gave him great peace.
He and Ellen believed strongly in philanthropy, donating both time and money to Blessed Sacrament school and church, among other charities. For years, John served as the treasurer for Blessed Sacrament and for Chevy Chase Village.
John enjoyed spending time with family and friends in the DC area and at his beach house in Henlopen Acres, Delaware.
He enjoyed playing tennis and paddleball, dining together after their weekly game. And while the groups eventually stopped playing, they kept meeting for the weekly dinners. He was a proud founding member of the “Camping Group”, a group of mostly college friends and their growing children, that went camping several times a year, eventually growing to more than 50 fun-loving campers and life-long friends.
With a zest for life, John loved to bring smiles and laughs to those around him. He loved a good party and could usually be found on the dance floor. He loved getting to know new friends and quickly building bonds with his genuine interest in everyone. John never complained, even in recent years as he ailed, taking the time to get to know and form strong bonds with many of his loving care givers.
Married to his “beautiful bride” Ellen of nearly 55 years, John’s love for her only grew long after she died December 2, 2019. He is survived by his four children—Jay Talbott, Scott (LeeAnn Hodges) Talbott, Sharon Talbott, and Alison (Eric) Durland; seven grandchildren—Daisy, Cecelia, John III, Edward, Lauren, Nathan, and Emily; three siblings—Ned, Tom, and Priscilla, as well as countless family, friends, and wonderful caregivers.
John is remembered for his sense of humor and his true commitment to all the wonderful relatives and friends from every facet of his long, engaged life. We love, you, dad, Pop, Uncle John, "Talbo", "Johnie"! We miss you already! Rest easy, reunited with mom, after a life truly well spent to the fullest!
