Born in Nashville, TN, Kate grew up in Thomasville, GA. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Theodore (Tod) Sedgwick, two daughters, Eliza Brunson (Stuart) of Nashville, Caroline of San Francisco, and four grandchildren, Abby, Mason, Hayes and Wade Brunson; a sister, Mary Jane McNeill (Arch) of Ochlocknee, GA, and a brother Will Watt III (Machelle) of Thomasville, GA.
Kate graduated from the University of Georgia and went on to earn a Masters Degree from there in Psychology. In 2009, she earned a Masters Degree in Public Health from Harvard. Kate had a lifelong passion for education and public health. In 1975, she co-authored a book entitled Children in Art, and worked in the Press Office at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. She taught Health and Ethics in the High School at Potomac School in McLean, VA. In the 2000s, she served on the Dean’s Committee of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She participated in many overseas trips to Europe and Africa to monitor Public Health School projects. Kate continued to pursue her interest in public health issues in Slovakia, where Tod served as US Ambassador from 2010-2015.
Kate was beloved by a very large number of friends all over the US and abroad. There are many stories of her kindness and consideration to others, especially in times of need.
Kate was a member of the Sulgrave Club, the Chevy Chase Club, the West Chop Club and Christ Church, Georgetown.
The family is grateful to her doctors and caregivers for their kindness to Kate, for respecting her wishes and for giving her a wonderful quality of life up until the end.
A service celebrating the life of Kate Sedgwick will be held at 2 pm, November 28, at Christ Church Georgetown, followed by a reception at the Metropolitan Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Massachusetts General Hospital in support of the Global Surgery and Education Fund.
