It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Michael F. Sugrue on April 5, 2025, at 87 years of age. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, father-in-law, and friend.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Monica, as well as his daughters Stephanie Conaghan (Tom), Marcia Sugrue (David Lesnik) and Katy Trosini (Peter), and his granddaughters Chloe, Caroline, Caileigh, Stella and Niamh. He is also survived by his sister, Clare McLaughlin (née Sugrue). He was predeceased by his parents, Michael J. Sugrue and Ada Sugrue (née O'Neill), and his sister, Dorothy A. Clarke (née Sugrue).
Dr. Sugrue earned his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Glasgow (Scotland) in 1967, where he met his beautiful wife. He had an illustrious career in ocular pharmacology, leading to the scientific and commercial success of a preeminent glaucoma drug treatment through Merck & Co. He was a loyal family man and friend and was an eternally curious learner in life. He and Monica led their family on a multi-continent adventure over the years. He loved wine, golf, food, and his loved ones - and not necessarily in that order!
A visitation will be held at The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 5949 Western Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20015 on Wednesday April 16, 2025 from 10:00am to 10:45am with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 11:00am.
