Dear Family Members,
I write to express my condolences on Mitzi's death. I was the President of the Jesuit Conference in Washington DC from 2006 to 14, and also a member of the JRS USA board.
Mitzi was a wonderful person, deeply dedicated to the protection of the most vulnerable throughout the world. JRS was blessed that Mitzi chose to end her advocacy career with us. I will always remember her passion, grasp of the issues, and willingness to share what she knew with others, especially in a mentor/training role.
Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers at this time.

Mitzi was a hard act to follow, even after a four year hiatus at ICMC. I called upon her wise counsel often, which she graciously and freely shared. She understood- in fact invented- what it meant to be flying solo in DC, what pitfalls to avoid , how to bring to bear the strengths of ICMC global staff on our work.
She took me by the hand and showed me the ropes in Geneva, beginning on my very first day on the job, at the UNHCR Annual Consultation. From that day on, for the next 12 Annual Consultations, we always blew our per diems with one dinner at her favorite Perle du Lac and always stayed at her beloved Geneva hotel together, next to the botanical garden of course.
Her leadership of our MENA working group was nothing short of masterful. She had the ability, as chair of that committee and many others, to bring out the best in all of us, to solicit our contributions, to make us feel valued as committee members.
Let’s not forget her wicked sense of humor. Let’s not forget the creation of the Refugee Data center in NY under her tutelage.
She was there at the beginning, and made so much happen. I will miss her deeply. Jane

To Mitzi's Family,
I was so saddened to learn of Mitzi's passing. She was a pillar of the refugee resettlement and assistance community. All of us who worked with her remember her grace, intelligence, and her quiet tenacity to help some of the most desperate victims of persecution around the world. She was never afraid to speak out against injustice or to speak up for refugees. There are untold numbers of refugees whose lives were saved, or profoundly changed for the better through her work and her life.
She will be greatly missed by all of us who had the honor and pleasure to have known her over the past decades. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends over her passing.

This morning’s WaPo online brought us the extremely sad news of the passing of the extraordinary Mitzi. We are out of town and cannot be with you today.
Her late husband Roger and I were fast friends and then we met Mitzi, about 40 years ago. We would see Mitzi only occasionally, not enough after Roger passed away.
Mitzi and Roger were both life forces, highly educated, who used their time and resources for the greater good. Mitzi lived close to her beliefs, downplayed so much about herself that she defined modesty and was just a great and gracious person to be around. It’s a sad event for us.
With admiration and great affection

To Mitzi's family,
We are deeply saddened and send you our prayers. Mitzi was a wonderful friend, a staunch advocate for refugees, and a strong voice agains injustice. She loved flowers, long lunches with wine, walks through gardens, silly jokes, and was the leader who got a few of us together to celebrate with the Revels for the winter solstice and Christmas. Mitzi was my friend and my confidant whom I will miss dearly.
We hope your memories of her will sustain you during this time. May she rest in peace!

Mitzi and i worked together at Jesuit Refugee Services/USA for nearly 7 years (2003-2011). She was truly a dedicated and deeply professional advocate for refugees. More than simply a talented professional, she was driven by a profound concern for the displaced people of our world. Working closely with her, she shared with me her passion for advocacy. I have always been thankful for this gift. Although advocacy for refugees in Mitzi's words always involved "the art of the possible," her great belief in the fundamental dignity of refugees who have been forced from their countries was the dominant force behind her work. I would like all her family to know that they, along with Mitzi, will be in my prayers these difficult days and that I will remember her with fondness as we celebrate the upcoming feast of Easter,
Ken Gavin, S.J.
