I was lucky to have known Phil, our paths did not cross often but his warm smile and generous demeanor will remain in my memories.  Once at a scientific meeting as I nervously prepared for a talk he came over shook my hand and as we talked he said "Terry I get nervous every time I give a talk."  His support of young people was constant like an anchor.  My thoughts and prayers are Phil's family and friends. He will be sorely missed.

As I was thinking about Phil's legacy in relation to the mining history of Creede, the chorus of a mining song I wrote came to mind. It went like this:
In them old abandoned diggins on the hill
You can here the voices of those miners if your still
They echo across the canyon, in the breezes as they sigh
In them old abandoned diggins 
Those old voices never die. (end)
Phil's voice will forever echo across the canyons in the mountains of the Creede mining district.

Dear Jean and the extended Bethke Family: I met Phil at my first job interview. I guess it went okay because what followed was 15 years of the most intense, scientifically exciting, and frankly, just plain fun period in my 30 yr career as a USGS employee. Phil had a remarkable ability to both encourage and challenge a young scientist to do better and more, to think critically about plan and purpose, and never lose sight of the goal. He also taught us to use the right tool for the job – sit on a chair, but never, never climb on one; calculate with a blackbox, but always be prepared to defend the numbers with pencil and paper; celebrate accomplishments, large and small with ice cream. To the Bethke Family--my deepest sympathy in your loss. I knew Phil when I worked in the Geologic Division of the USGS many years ago.  He was one of the nicest people--always had a wonderful smile & cheerful words.  I'll remember him always.

I met Phil as a young geologist in Creede, Colorado and more recently, had the occasional pleasure of having in come by the office of Rio Grande Silver in Creede to catch up with our exploration acitivities, always humble and informative, his visits always made my day, rest in peace Phil.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I met Phil when we were neighborhood kids in Winnetka, Illinois. Phil was actually my first boyfriend at age 7, I think. He was a great friend and I always looked forward to seeing him at our New Trier Reunions. May the many cherished memories of him sustain you through this very difficult time.
