I came to know Brooke during the 1980s at the many festive gatherings given by the Hannahs.  While I haven't seen him in some time, I can recall his infectious laugh and big heart, always a joy to talk to.  I am keeping Gina, her family and Brooke's family in my thoughts and prayers during this very sad time.  Brooke's passing came much too soon and I am sure that he will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Brooke, we will miss you and your wit and love for life. Difficult to imagine one of the cousins not with us any more in this life. Much love to you, Gina, from the "eldest" cousin and wife.



Brooke was a dearest and most delightful friend in college and forever afterwards (all these decades in Washington) , and always such a great source of "bon hommerie" (if there is such a word) and joie de vivre. as many have commented, I will always remember his enthusiasm for music (especially playing all the Irish instruments/songs we used to listen to ), love of fine wine, scotch and food, travel and life in general. He will be greatly missed but his spirit remains strong with us. Gina, and all who have known and loved Brooke, we are so sorry for your loss..it's a real hole . our prayers are with you.

My cousin Brooke was 6 years my senior (my brother, Bruce's age) and I regret that I didn't get to know him growing up like my big brother and our other cousins of the same age group did.  I am, however, most grateful for the time my husband and I got to spend with him and Regina following our most memorable 2010 Bortner Reunion. We spent a lovely evening together and Brooke entertained us at the piano - looking and sounding so much like my father, it was uncanny. That is the memory I will cherish forever. Gina- please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss.

I am sorry to learn of the passing of one of the kids I once knew in Original Northwood so long ago.

Brooke was memorable for his zest for life, contagious sense of humor, and immense musical talent, especially Celtic music.  My condolences to Gina and all family and friends, Cindy Stewart, Vienna, VA

Brooke--I will miss your comraderie and joy of life.  Gina, please accept my sincere sympathy for your loss.  He was a very special guy.

I first met Brooke in the early 1970s.  He was one of several persons that played a major role during that pivotal time of my life.  My favorite recollection is Brooke keeping me company as I did the dishes following dinner parties - usually with a fine wine.  After the hectic blur of preparing and having the dinner party, Brooke would be part of the "wind down" and reflection of the day.  We also had a neighbor who was an editor for the Washington Post who would come home in the wee hours of the morning, and the three of us would stay up for hours in wonderful discussion.  Brooke will always be part of many good memories.  My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Having known Brooke since he first commenced his law practice in Prince George's County, Maryland (some 40 years ago), I can attest to his excellant reputation and always pleasant demeanor. He was a true gentleman and a friend to many within the bar. We all practiced at a time when your word was your bond. Brooke's handshake and warm smile were characteristics of civility at its best. He will be missed by his many friends at the bar and bench, sincerely, Dick Sothoron

We have known Brooke for 30 years through mutual friends and have enjoyed some great times together with wonderful music and fine food. Our sincerest condolences to Gina and all his close friends.

I met Brooke in 1959; freshman year at Poly. The way we were organized, we spent the next four years in the same classroom 9-2:30 and probably had lunch at the same table every day. Brooke was not only my introduction to the Baltimore on the other side of Falls Road (a vague Diner reference) but also the friend who helped me most in becoming less of a gawky introverted outsider with a funny accent. We remained close friends after high school; participated in each other's wedding and shared the memories of great dinners, wine, travel,music and conversation. I recall with a smile our last phone call; we closed the distance and time in five minutes and we were comfortable old friends again. Lois and I feel the loss keenly. We will treasure the memories forever.

I only met Brooke once at his and Regina's house for pre-Thanksgiving dinner for Regina's employees at the Library of Congress.  I had heard a lot of good things about him from Regina.  In person, I found him to be very approachable, funny, and fiercely intelligent.  I wish I had another opportunity to get to know the man better.  Rest in Peace, good man.

My condolences to all of Brooke's family and friends. We lived two houses apart growing up on Southview Road in Northwood. I even babysat for him when I was a teenager when his parents would go to the symphony and other functions. He was always a bright, kind and interesting person and I am glad to have known him.

I'm saddened to hear about Brooke's passing. About 30 years ago, Brooke and I hung out together. I especially enjoyed his warmth and sense of humor.
