Ms. Sonia M. Hurtado was born on October 23, 1953 and raised in Bogota, Colombia under the guidance of her father, Pablo Antonio Hurtado Castaneda & her mother, Maria Alicia Z De Hurtado, and with her brothers.
Sonia, after several years of studying abroad, traveling and residing in Paris, then moved to the United States, settling and making her home in Washington D.C. Over the years of living in the Washington D.C. area Sonia made many friends and colleagues, whom several were dear and cherished by her. Always through her giving and thoughtfulness during the holidays, a birthday, or just a “thinking of you” gift to make someone happy was a pleasure. Spending time with her friends for dinner, birthday celebrations’, or just a night of dancing was a highlight of Sonia’s in which she cherished.
When not spending her weekends traveling to visit friends or in the night life of dance clubs around DC, one of her ongoing passions was reading a good book or watching a favorite movie at home with a nice hot cup of her favorite tea.
In her professional career, Sonia worked for Neiman Marcus for many years in the field of precious gems and stones, with a clientele list of several elite Washingtonians and others from around the world that trusted her knowledge and expertise in the field of specialized and expensive jewelry. Always, providing professionalism and outstanding service promoted her to the $1,000,000.00 dollar recognition for top jewelry sales.
Upon leaving Neiman Marcus due to her health, over the years Sonia continued to love and live life to its fullest despite her health condition. Staying abreast of ALS, its continued research, other ALS members, and outreach for improvements to better serve those suffering with this debilitating disease. Always researching and sending out emails or chats to friends to become involved or to know the effects of ALS on families and loved ones.
In all her struggles with this disease Sonia never complained, she was always the kind, gentle, and most humorous person still thinking of others or wanting to do something for someone else. If you said no to her she insisted,” oh no please” let me do it. Sonia was very particular about certain things especially her fashions, hair, and makeup.
Once during the earlier stages of her health condition in the winter, she fell and broke one of her legs wearing one of her favorite DESIGNER boots, and when the EMT’s had informed her they could not harness her leg with the boot on, saying the boot would have to be cut, she insisted they would have to do something else because the boot was not to be cut, they are my favorite boots she insisted. The EMT responded well it’s the boot or the leg lady. Well, the boot lost, and the leg was secured for treatment! This is one of the many stories Sonia told over the years, and there were many stories, and Sonia was the only one who could tell them and capture her audience’s attention.
The joy, beauty, laughter, smile, and kindness of Sonia will be missed and remembered by all those who knew her and the lives she touched over the years. Especially during the holidays, birthdays, special occasions and the many years prior to her health condition, in serving and feeding the homeless around the Washington D.C. area.
Sonia is survived by her Brother Fabian Hurtado, along with numerous relatives and dear friends who remember and celebrate her life.
