She was born in Manhattan on August 1, 1953. She met her husband, Henry Ponti, while volunteering as an EMT at the Aviation Volunteer Fire Company #3 in Clason Point, NY. They were married on December 8, 1979 and moved to Washingtonville in June of 1981. While raising two children, she worked as a medical transcriptionist at Orange Radiology in Monroe, NY (since retired) and was the Deputy Treasurer to the Washingtonville Fire District.
Janice was very active in the local community. She served as a Girl Scout troop leader, sewed costumes for the Washingtonville CSD school plays, and even produced “A Dickens of a Christmas Carol” and “The Blooming Grove Horse Thief Detective Society.” In addition, she served on the Village of Washingtonville Centennial Committee, the “Save the Mansion of the Brotherhood Winery” project, the Arts & Cultural Society, and volunteered at the Taft Playground Project in the 1980s.
Janice was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. An avid knitter and amateur seamstress, she created elaborate costumes for Halloween, complete with a themed “haunted house” trick treaters enjoyed every year. She was also a very skilled gardener and enjoyed creating elaborate flower beds that dominated her yard. She loved the beach (but wouldn’t go in the ocean) and went cruising with her husband and friends every year; her favorite trip was to Mediterranean. Janice also loved to read, watch British TV, root for the NY Yankees and adored French bulldogs.
Janice left a final gift of organ donation, of which three people’s lives were saved. She was given an Honor Walk at Vassar Hospital before the procedure.
In addition to Henry, Janice is survived by her son, James Henebry, his wife Stacy and their daughters Genna and Brooke of Melbourne, FL; her daughter Jessica Vezuli and her husband Franz of Lagrangeville, NY; and her sister Michelle Browning, her husband Paul, and their children Thomas, Erin, and Braedon of Oradell, NJ.
A memorial service will be held at David T. Ferguson’s Funeral Home, 20 North Street; Washingtonville, NY on Sunday, February 7th from 2 – 6 pm. If you wish to attend the Memorial Service via Zoom Meeting please follow the Link below.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley.
She will live forever in our hearts and memories.
