1SG Joseph Michael Pfeffer, 69, of Washingtonville, New York died in the early morning hours of Monday, April 17th, 2023. Known as “Mike” to his friends and family, he passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Born on October 10, 1953 in Fort Dix, New Jersey, the fourth child (of six) and only son of the late Rosalie (Colfer) and COL Joseph M. Pfeffer. After graduating from Lenape High School in Marlton, New Jersey in 1971, Mike enlisted in the US Army Reserve before entering active duty in September. He completed basic training at Fort Ord, California and went on to become an Artilleryman and an Airborne Ranger. He served 24 active duty years with tours in Georgia, North Carolina, Germany, New York, Texas, and Korea, taking his family along for the ride.
In 1995, he helped launch the Army JROTC program at Washingtonville High School and served as its Army Instructor for 20 years, encouraging hundreds of students to be the very best they can be. Known as the Magic Battalion, the distinguished program continues to serve hundreds of cadets instilling a sense of community, leadership and teaching teens how to be better citizens.
Mike’s accolades throughout both careers speak to his integrity, accomplishment and steadfastness. His enthusiasm for the mission carried over into his personal life, which is never more apparent than the story of how he became an official honorary Girl Scout along with his wife and daughters, even creating special cadences for the troop to sing on their many adventures.
Known for his stories, quick wit, bright “TV guy” smile, an extensive vocabulary, and impeccable navigation skills including knowing the nearest Dunkin at any given moment. He was a shoulder to lean on for his family, offering direction, countless words of wisdom, and levity for any and every situation. He enjoyed all things related to US History, a good cup of coffee, reading, any kind of strategy game, and a good long drive to anywhere.
He will be remembered fondly as the best Dad, Grandpop, brother, uncle, friend, 1SG, and teacher. A true mentor with unquestionable courage and a dedicated team player. He cherished his family and their many gatherings, shared stories and lengthy dinner table conversations. He adored his grandchildren - the time spent with them brought him the greatest joy.
He is survived by his three daughters: Michelle Pfeffer, Caroline Plant, and Jacqueline Foley; their partners William O’Keeffe, Jeff Plant, and Sean Foley; five grandchildren: Jax and Celina Masri, James, Isla and Callum Foley; sisters, Marta Mullan and Terri Harper; brothers-in-law, Drew Mullan and Satch Harper; nieces and nephews: Steve Hoagland, Tim & Renee Hoagland, Staci Clements, Todd Gottlieb, JoAnne & Eric Cattell, Daniel Rice, Mike Dimascio, Sean Hinderer, Chad Mullan, Joseph & Katie Mullan, David Mullan, Kyle Harper, Megan Harper, Kevin & Rachel Harper; great nieces and nephews, Lauren, Stephen Jr, Jamie, Hunter, Julia, Lindsay, Mackenzie, Zachary, Cody, Amber, Jade, Mikaela, Evelyn, Lily, George, Liberty, Adelynn, Jack, and Kaven.
