Veronica Hannon aged 99 years passed away with her daughters at her side on July 19th at the home of her daughter Christine Hannon in Denver, NC where she had been visiting since April 2020. She spent this time doing crosswords, playing words with friends, looking at Facebook and tending her windowsill garden with Scout the yorkie on her lap.
Born in January 1923 in Bronx, NY she was the daughter of Joseph McKeown and Christine Quinn. She graduated Cathedral High School and her graduation ceremony took place in St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
In 1947 Veronica married Richard Hannon in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. They lived in Bronx, NY until moving to Monroe, NY in 1962. They were married 41 years until his death in 1988.
Veronica was a faithful parishioner of St. Anastasia’s Roman Catholic Church in Harriman NY until age prevented her from attending. She was also a member of The Jolly Seniors of Monroe and enjoyed many hours at the Monroe Senior Center where she volunteered teaching line dancing which was her favorite activity.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband, son James and brothers Thomas and Joseph.
Veronica is survived by her brother Robert of Florida, son Richard and his wife Elaine of Delaware, daughter Christine and her husband Duncan Kane of Denver, NC, and daughter Frances and her husband Richard DiDonato of Rock Tavern, NY. She is also survived by grandchildren Katie, Erin and Danny Hannon, James Hannon whom she helped raise, Jenna and Jillian Kane, and Danielle, Ricky and Emily DiDonato. Also surviving her are great grandchildren Ricky and Layla DiDonato, Saoirce Camacho and Theodora Peterson.
Veronica’s biggest achievement was her family. Her first child James was severely disabled with Cerebral Palsy and she lovingly cared for him until his death at twenty five years old. Though she knew how challenging that was to be, she said at the time “I can do this but I want more” and bravely went on to have her other three children. Though it was at times a very difficult endeavor they were never deprived of her attention. This truly was her Magnum Opus.
A special thanks to her long time neighbor and dear friend Mary Dolan who nurtured their friendship with many cards and calls through the years despite the distance between them.
Funeral and graveside services were private with her loved ones attending.
A mass of christian burial will occur Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at 12:30 PM at St. Anastasia Church, 21 N. Main Street, Harriman, NY 10926. A burial will occur Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at St Anastasia Cemetery, Harriman, NY 10926.
