Waterville – Charles “Charlie” McKinley Simpson, Jr., 92, of Waterville, died Wednesday May 3, 2017. He was born in Skowhegan on April 3, 1925, a son of Vera (Southard) and Charles Simpson. He was educated in local schools before enlisting in the US Navy during WWII where he served as a coxswain and was honorably discharged. Returning to Maine he had the good fortune and the good sense to marry Marjorie Louise Pearl and together they had two sons.
As a youngster Charlie thought of becoming a jockey but that dream would be realized only as a racing fan betting on his favorites. He did work for many years for H.P. Hood and then upon early retirement as a security guard during winters in Florida and in Bar Harbor during the summers.
Charlie loved playing baseball and then softball with the Elm City League. In Florida he was active in the Senior League and was on a gold medal winning team. When the physical demands of playing the game became too much he turned his passion into becoming an umpire.
Charlie is survived by his son Douglas Simpson of Waterville; his six grandchildren: Denielle O’Neal, Scott Simpson, Travis Simpson, Tara Post, Krystel Simpson and Adam Simpson; his three great-grandchildren: Samantha Post, Tyler Simpson and Abby Simpson; as well as his sister Judy Strange and her husband Mel. Charlie was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Marjorie, in 2009; his son Steven Simpson, in 2016; his special granddaughter, Rebecca; his great-grandson, Seth; his brothers: George Simpson, Norman Lasalle and Leroy “Sam” Lasalle and his sister Gloria Abbott.
A committal service will be held on Thursday May 11, 2017 at 9:00 am at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Please visit www.veilleuxfuneralhome.com to share condolences, memories and tributes with Charlie’s family.
