

Augusta—David L. Raynes, Sr., 70, of Belgrade, died February 26, 2014 at Maine General Alfond Center for Health due to complications from Leukemia. David was born in Augusta, March 2, 1943, the son of Nathan and Mildred (Butler) Raynes.
David grew up in Waterville, and lived in Winslow for many years before retiring to his lake home on Great Pond in Belgrade. He served in the United States Marine Corp. He worked for many years for the area’s local telephone company, New England Telephone, later known as NYNEX, and finally Bell Atlantic. After retirement, he started working as a bus driver for the Vassalboro School System (AOS92). He always said he felt his students on the bus were like his own kids, and he cared for them dearly.
David is predeceased by his parents, father-in-law Lucien Drouin, brother Bruce Raynes, daughter Tammy Barton, and brothers-in-law Roger Drouin, Bill Cobb, and Larry Oakes.
He is survived by his wife Lucienne Raynes; children David Raynes, Jr. and his wife Tina; Todd Raynes and his wife Stephanie; sisters Jane Peatfield and Charlotte Oakes; mother-in- law Alice Drouin; brothers-in-law Henry Drouin and Herman Drouin; sister-in-law Mary Jane Cobb; and grandchildren David Raynes III, Nathan Raynes, Alyssa Burnette, Emily Raynes and Robert Paquet; great-grandson Gerard Fortin; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville. A mass of Christian burial will be held 11 AM, Monday, March 3, 2014 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Monument Street, Winslow. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade at a later date.
