Thinking of Herbert today. Sending my thoughts and  prayers to family. I know he is up in heaven with Helen and other family members joking around.  He was always good to me and my family, and I’m sure everyone he met.  God bless and be with you all!

So very sorry for your loss. I’m Kemper Conley’s daughter. Helen Elizabeth Conley was my mom. I lost her in August of 2021.  I was very fond of Helen and Herbert. My sister and I sat on your front porch often. I remember Sissy the most.  I wished I’d have known as I would have come to pay my respects. I used to have Joyce’s phone number but we lost touch as well.  Sending prayers!

My association with Mr. McAllister, while fairly short and late in his life, has been very full and rewarding to me. I have delivered meals to him on Fridays for the past few years. I looked forward to each visit, and would plan my routes so that I could spend time with him and listen to his many stories without the need to rush away.  
He spoke enthusiastically of Crozet and growing up on the mountain. He was very proud of his time at "the plant" and his years manning the engine on the volunteer crew. His eyes would moisten when telling stories that included the love of his life. 
Though his memory did not keep pace with his spirit, he would remember to ask about my family, as we shared stories on the porch. I once told him that he was born 13 days before my mother, and each visit thereafter he would ask about my parents' wellbeing.  He would ask about my wife, and daughter. He had a deep capacity for truly listening and being engaged genuine conversations. 
He never knew my name, and in reality I was a stranger to him. But I never felt like one. Mr. McAllister was the embodiment of the adage, "I've never met a stranger ". In his company I felt completely accepted and respected. 
I cherish the brief time I had the honor and good fortune to share with him. I extend my deepest sympathies and condolences to all his family. Fridays will no longer be quite as bright for me.


We didn't know Herbert & Helen very long but from the first meeting they both opened their home and their hearts to my wife and I (Denise and Paul).

We really enjoyed seeing Herbert but i think he enjoyed seeing us more. We always brought him chocolates from the UK and I'm told he would eat them all in one night. Then he would complain about stomach ache... I wonder why?

Herbert's stories always made us laugh and he will be greatly missed. RIP

Our greatest memories were going to Uncle Herbert and Aunt Helen’s each summer. Uncle Herbert telling us his cows had two short legs and two long ones so they could climb the mountains. We felt so much love from them. They both will be greatly missed.

I will always cherish in my heart how Mr. McAllister still remembered me and cared about my wellbeing when I left the Afton area.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family now and in the days to come.

Herbert was a dear friend.  I communicated with him often to ask how he was doing and to see if he needed anything.  He enjoyed listening to good music, especially gospel, and invited Les Fink and I along with our spouses and some other friends to his home on several occasions to perform.  When we went to other places to perform, I would always go by to pick him up and take him.  He always seemed to have a good time and enjoyed the music and fellowship very much.  When Helen passed away, the song “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” meant a lot to him and sometimes there were tears in his eyes, but sometimes there would be a smile.  He will be missed, but we will see him again together someday.

I have delivered Meals on Wheels to Herbert for several years on Wednesdays. He was always smiling and I enjoyed chatting with him and he would always walk outside and wave to me as I drove away. I will miss seeing him and am keeping him and his family in my prayers.
