

He was born July 3, 1925 in Smyth Co., a son of the late John Lawrence, Sr., and Leslie Caldwell Shiflett.
He served aboard the USS Puffer in the United States Navy, was a member of Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Trustee, Usher and Sunday School Teacher, was a volunteer for the Waynesboro Generals Baseball Team selling tickets, was a former board member of the Salvation Army and retired from the E. I. DuPont Company in Waynesboro after 38 years of service, where he held the position of fire marshall and supervisior.
He prepared income taxes for over 60 years and following his retirement enjoyed woodworking, gardening, basket weaving, working puzzles and being with the his friends at Hardees at lunch time.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers; Bill Craghead, Paul Shiflett, Leroy Shiflett, Ralph Shiflett and Gene Shiflett.
Survivors include his loving wife, Delores “Corky” Shiflett, son, Russel G. “Pete” Shiflett and wife Debbie of Waynesboro, a daughter, Beverly A. “Belle” Hite and husband J. Kent of Waynesboro, four brothers; Cornelius Shiflett and wife Betty of Leesburg, Elmer Shiflett and wife Barbara of Waynesboro, Doug Shiflett and wife Peggy of Waynesboro, Danny Shiflett of Waynesboro, four granddaughters; Rhonda Henderson, Christy Hostetter, Cam Norton, Shelley Armstrong, four great-granddaughters; Kaitlynn Ross, Elisa Hostetter, Kendall and Carly Norton.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, July19, 2012 at Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church by Pastor Paul LaPrevotte and Phil Forehand.
Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park with military rites provided by American Legion Post 340.
Honorary pallbearers will be his nieces and nephews attending the service.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 PM Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
Memorial contributions may be made to the parking lot fund of Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church, 901 Shenandoah Ave., Waynesboro, Va. 22980 or the roof fund of West Waynesboro Church of Christ, 2212 Cortland St., Waynesboro, Va. 22980.
