
Born September 3, 1943 in Augusta County, VA she was a daughter of the late Herbert A. Berry and Valley (Phillips) Smiley.
Judy was a U.S. Army veteran having served her country honorably overseas in Kuwait during the Gulf War in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Following her active duty enlistment, she became a part of the reserves and retired with the rank of SSG. She was awarded many medals, ribbons and several bronze stars for her service. She enjoyed singing and was a previous member of the Charlottesville Women’s Choir and the Valley Harmony Chorus. As an animal lover, Judy had a deep affection for cats, dogs, and horses.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, James I. Smiley, Jr.; brother, Roger Berry; sister-in-law, Betty Berry; and two nephews, Ricky Berry and Ricky Hogsett.
Survivors include her niece, Joy Satter (Brian Shifflett) of Elkton; nephew, Chris McGann of Stuarts Draft; half-brother, Micky Berry (Suzanne) of Mount Sidney; and half-sisters, Barbara Fitzgerald, Sandra Martin and Sherry Keating all of Richmond.
Following cremation, the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 9, 2023 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St., Waynesboro. Military honors will be provided at the start of the visitation at 6:00 p.m.
